I waited all night for you
Hands taut like tightropes,
Feet anchored to the floor
And afraid to look away
As though a moments rest would lose you
Student by student marched by
Like a parade of ghosts,
As they let cold air slip in with every opened door
It was as if their spirits were whisked away into an afterlife
Or a secret place I couldn't go
I played it out in my head
(what I would say to you if you came)
As old, florescent lights flickered above me
And a TV played without sound
Hours passed hours
As the stream of traffic went dry
I did not know now who was the ghost
A couple staggered in
Drunk and unaware that I was there,
Still bathing under dying florescent lights
