Jay-Z - Holy Grail Lyrics

Jay-Z Lyrics

Holy Grail Lyrics
Jump to:
[Verse 1: Justin Timberlake]
You take the clothes off my back
And I let you
You steal the food right out of my mouth
And I watch you eat it
I still don't know why
Why our love is so much
Ohhh
You curse my name
In spite to put me to shame
Air all my laundry in the streets
Dirty or clean
Give it up for fame
But I still don't know why
Why I love it so much
Yea

[Hook]
And baby
It's amazing I'm in this maze with you
I just can't crack your code
One day you screaming you love me loud
The next day you're so cold
One day you here, one day you there, one day you care
You're so unfair sipping from your cup
Till it runneth over, Holy Grail

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
Blue told me to remind you niggas
F*ck that shit y'all talk about
I'm the nigga, caught up in all these lights and cameras
But look what that shit did to Hammer
God-damnit it I like it
The bright lights is enticing
But look what it did to Tyson
All that money in one night
30 mill for one fight
But soon as all the money blows, all the pigeons take flight
F*ck the fame, keep cheating on me
What I do, I took her back, fool me twice
That's my bad, I can't even blame her for that
Enough to make me wanna murder
Momma please just get my bail
I know nobody to blame
Kurt Cobain, I did it to myself

[Brigde: Justin Timberlake]
And we all just entertainers [x2]
And we're stupid, and contagious

[Hook: Justin Timberlake]

[Verse 3: Jay-Z]
Now I got tattoos on my body
Psycho bitches in my lobby
I got haters in the paper
Photo shoots with paparazzi
Can't even take my daughter for a walk
See them by the corner store
I feel like I'm cornered off
Enough is enough
I'm calling this off
Who the f*ck I'm kidding though?
I'm getting high
Sitting low
Sliding by
In that big body
Curtains all in my window
This fame hurt
But this chain works
I think back
You asked the same person
If this is all you had to deal with
Nigga deal with
It, this shit ain't work
This light work
Camera snapping, my eyes hurt
Niggas dying back where I was birthed
F*ck your iris and IRS
Get the hell up off of your high horse
You got the shit that niggas die for
Dry yours
Why you mad
Take the good with the bad
Don't throw that baby out with the bath water
You're still alive
Still that nigga
Niggas you survived
You still getting bigger nigga
Living the life
Vanilla wafers
In a villa
Illest nigga alive
Michael Jackson, Thriller

[Hook: Justin Timberlake]

[Bridge]
You get the air of my lungs whenever you need it
You take the blade right out of my heart just so you can watch me bleeding
I still don't know why
Why I love you so much
Yea
And you play this game in spite to drive me insane
I got it tatooed on my sleeve forever in ink with guess who's name
But I still don't know why
Our love is so much

[Hook]

Holy Grail Info:

Holy Grail is from Jay-Z's twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail. It features vocals from singer Justin Timberlake and serves as the album's first single. It was produced by The-Dream, Timbaland and Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon, with additional production from No ID.

The song's Lyrics can be interpreted as Jay-Z's and Timberlake's love-hate affair for fame. It interpolates Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." As well as borrowing the lines, "And we all just. Entertainers. And we're stupid. And contagious," Jay also raps, "Nobody to blame. Kurt Cobain. I did it to myself." Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, gave permission for the rapper to use words from Nirvana's classic tune. "I'm letting Jay-Z use Lyrics - Frances [Bean Cobain] would freak [if she knew about it]," she told The Huffington Post. "Jay-Z's huge and we're friends. I mean we're not besties or anything...."

"Holy Grail", along with another track from Magna Carta... Holy Grail called "Oceans" were recorded in 2011 during the recording sessions for Jay-Z's collaborative album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne. West wanted the two songs to appear on Watch the Throne, but Jay-Z chose to keep them for his upcoming studio album and they were replaced with "No Church in the Wild" and "Made in America". The early version of the instrumental was created in 2011 by The-Dream. When the recording sessions for MCHG started, Timbaland together with fellow producer J-Roc rearranged it to create the final track

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Jay-Z stated that "Holy Grail" was "the map for the album" and that it set the tone for the rest of MCHG. When the song was first recorded for Watch the Throne Jay-Z thought it would get lost on the album and decided to keep it as the "center piece" for his next album

The Holy Grail was the cup or chalice used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper, which was the subject of much medieval legend and romance.

The song won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2014 ceremony. "I want to tell Blue (his baby daughter), 'look, daddy got a gold sippy cup for you,'" Jay joked in his acceptance speech.

The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler and was released on August 29, 2013 on Facebook, making social media history as the first time a clip from major artists debuted strictly on the site. Dubbed a "visual" rather than a "music video", the piece is a remixed version of the original album version, featuring pitch shifted vocals and a change in the song structure.
