I was the belle of the Governor's Ball

Shelley Duvall was an American actress most well known for her role as Wendy Torrance in "The Shining." In an iconic scene, Shelley Duvall hides in a bathroom from her axe-wielding husband, played by Jack Nicholson.
Hiding in the bathroom like Shelley Duvall
+
You had a nosebleed, you were in my way
+
And you didn't remind me of anything
+
So, let's see how long we can go without touching
+
Why don't you sing me to sleep?
+
I know you'd never actually think about jumping
+
But do it for me
+
Two kids in a trench coat living alone
+
I was too happy to feel at home
+
Dancing ourselves clean late New Year's Eve
+
You deserved better, you wanted me
+
So, let's see how long we can go without talking
+
Watching me pretending to sleep
+
I'm next to you, you're next to nothing
+
You promised that you'd never leave
+
But maybe you'll do it for me
+
(Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh)
+
(Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
+
Now, let's see how far I can run without stopping
+
And she can pretend to be me
+
Since she took my place in my bed on that stage
+
I have not lost any sleep
+
Being myself wasn't easy
+
Do it for me
+

"The Governor's Waltz" is the fourth track from Phoebe Bridgers' third album, Lost Weekend. It was released on August 14, 2026 through Dead Oceans.

Phoebe Bridgers said:
"This melody has been around forever. My friend Christian [Lee Hutson] sent me a voice memo of him playing piano, I would just listen to it, listen to it, listen to it and singing words to it felt totally wrong. Weirdly, one day I just forced myself to try to sit down and do it, and the only thing that felt right was writing about my life a little like a fairytale instead of so literally. And it's just these same themes of not feeling my life, of not feeling present for my life. The really, really spooky thing is that I have a lyric about Shelley Duval, which is the first lyric that I wrote for the song. I went to sleep, woke up the next day after writing it, and she had passed away. Rest in peace Shelley, we love you."
