Elizabeth Taylor
Do you think it's forever?
That view of Portofino was on my mind
When you called me at the Plaza Athénée
Ooh, oftentimes it doesn't feel so glamorous to be me
All the right guys promised they'd stay
Under bright lights, they withered away
But you bloom
Portofino was on my mind
And I think you know why
And if your letters ever said, "Goodbye"
I'd
Cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor
Tell me for real, do you think it's forever?
Been number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have
Be my NY when Hollywood hates me
Only as hot as your last hit, baby
Be number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have you
Hey, what could you possibly get
For the girl who has everything and nothing all at once?
Babe, I would trade the Cartier for someone to trust (just kidding)
We hit the best booth at Musso & Frank's
You say I'm bad news, I just say, "Thanks"
And you look at me like you're hypnotized
And I think you know why
And if you ever leave me high and dry
I'd
Cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor
Tell me for real, do you think it's forever?
Been number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have
Be my NY when Hollywood hates me
Only as hot as your last hit, baby
Be number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have you
Elizabeth Taylor
Do you think it's forever?
If I can't have you
All my white diamonds and lovers are forever
In the papers, on the screen, and in their minds
All my white diamonds and lovers are forever
Don't you ever end up anything but mine
I
Cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor
Tell me for real, do you think it's forever?
Been number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have you
Be my NY when Hollywood hates me
You're only as hot as your last hit, baby
Be number one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have you
All my white diamonds and lovers are forever (Elizabeth Taylor)
In the papers, on the screen, and in their minds (do you think it's forever?)
All my white diamonds and lovers are forever
Don't you ever end up anything but mine
Oh

Taylor Swift - Elizabeth Taylor Video
(Show video at the top of the page)

Taylor Swift may have had Elizabeth Taylor in mind while gazing out at Portofino, but it's the "diamonds are forever" icon who first left her indelible mark on the seaside village.

On track 2 of "The Life of a Showgirl," Swift turns Taylor's legacy into a sparkling pop bop, fusing old-Hollywood glamour with a modern-day love letter - almost certainly to her fiancé Travis Kelce.

Swift sings: "If your letters ever said, 'Goodbye' / I'd cry my eyes violet / Elizabeth Taylor / Tell me for real do you think it's forever?"

She closes with the vow: "All my white diamonds and lovers are forever / Don't you ever end up anything but mine."

Swift and Taylor would have gotten along famously, according to the man who stood at the movie legend's side for two decades.

"I don't think there's any question that she would've adored Taylor," Tim Mendelson said on a video call sitting next to Barbara Berkowitz, Taylor's attorney since 1989. Mendelson met Taylor in September 1990 and served as a personal assistant until she died in 2011.

On Taylor Swift's upcoming album "The Life of a Showgirl," the second track is titled "Elizabeth Taylor." Swift has been influenced by Taylor's rebellion against Hollywood's studio system, and Taylor's eight marriages and Swift's high-profile relationships have drawn similar tabloid attention.

"I think she would've loved Taylor Swift," he said. "I think they could have been friends."

This isn't the first time the Eras Tour singer has invoked the movie star. In her 2017 hit "...Ready For It?" she sang, "And he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor / Every love I've known in comparison is a failure."

Mendelson and Berkowitz serve as co-trustees of House of Taylor and The Elizabeth Taylor Estate, and are officers of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which provides direct care, prevention programs and family support for people living with HIV. Founded in 1991, the charity reflects Taylor's push to confront AIDS with compassion and visibility at a time when few others would. A share of proceeds from Taylor's fragrance line and sales of $65 crew neck sweatshirts produced in the same colorway as Swift's new album will benefit the foundation.

Mendelson couldn't be more excited for a new audience to learn about the legend who rewrote Hollywood's rules, captivated crowds and devoted her platform to the AIDS crisis.

"We couldn't be more thrilled," he said. "It's a huge tribute to Elizabeth, and we couldn't have asked for anything better to happen as a way of bringing attention to Elizabeth's legacy to a younger generation."

That balance between adoration and scrutiny defined Taylor's world, and Swift navigates it today.
