Zach Top - South of Sanity Lyrics

Zach Top - South of Sanity Lyrics
Official

Playin' a rodeo in Montana tonight
+
She's two thousand miles away
+
Says she loves me on the phone as she cries
+
Wishes I'd come home to stay
+
But I'm somewhere outside of Missoula
+
They just called my name from the stage
+
When we hung up she was talkin' leavin'
+
Now how am I supposed to sing and play
+
She's left me somewhere south of sanity
+
Still just north of insane
+
The show is over I tried twice to call her back
+
But no answer either time
+
My thoughts are racin' like a fast car 'round the track
+
Ah, and I can't get her off my mind
+
And I'm somewhere outside Albuquerque
+
They just called my name from the stage
+
When we last talked she was talkin' leavin'
+
Now how am I supposed to sing and play
+
She's left me somewhere south of sanity
+
Still just north of
+
Startin' to believe I might be losin' everything
+
Still I'm somewhere outside Amarillo
+
They just called my name from the stage
+
When we last talked she was talkin' leavin'
+
But I gotta show I gotta play
+
Somewhere south of sanity
+
Still just north of insane
+

(Show video at the top of the page)

"South of Sanity" is a song recorded by American country music singer Zach Top. It was released as a promotional single from his second studio album, Ain't in It for My Health. Top co-wrote the song with Carson Chamberlain and Mark Nesler, and was produced by Chamberlain.

Following the upbeat summer lead single "Good Times & Tan Lines," "South of Sanity" marked a distinct tonal shift, premiering as a darker, more introspective offering. Top announced the song with little fanfare, sharing only a somber acoustic teaser the night before its release, captioned simply: "New one comin in hot." The song debuted amid the singer's run on Dierks Bentley's Broken Branches Tour and ahead of Top's headlining Cold Beer & Country Music Tour.

Lyrically, the song paints a vivid picture of a touring artist trapped between duty and loss. The narrator, playing a rodeo in Montana while his lover pleads for him to return, watches their relationship dissolve in real time through unanswered calls and emotional distance. The line "Somewhere south of sanity, just north of insane" becomes a haunting refrain that tracks his mental deterioration from Missoula to Amarillo.

Country Thang Daily described Top as "the mainstream's saving grace" and asserted that "South of Sanity" "proves once again that he's not here to chase trends. He's here to keep country country."
