Long before
Long before I felt the pain of my mother
Long before I felt the pain of her labor
It was the rhythm of Africa I heard
It was the wealth of a resourceful country I smelt
Long before I arrived into this world
It was Africa I was destined to be born into
Long before I could bear nationality
It was African that I bore
Long before I walked upon the surface of this earth
My fate had already been sealed
Long before I could think and feel
It was tears of joy and excitement that filled my heart
When my mother held me to herself and whispered in to my ears
It was the pride of my skin that kept me excited
And when the chilly palms of the old women that birthed me touched my skin
And the fresh water that bathed run down my skin
It was the warmth of Africa that I felt
It was then that my reality began
So let the world fight about whose teeth is sharp and whose is blunt
Who is stronger and who is weaker
Whose faith is true and whose faith is fake
I am but An African
For Long before anything else
Before the attachments and associations of this life
I was born an African
And till the end
I'll remain an African
Elabe Afrika vi dzidzie menye
Ghana vi dzidzie menye
Anlo vie menye
Eye ameyibor ye menye
And so when you get there before me
If they ask about me
Just let them know
