Christmas Carols
O! Come Ye Down To Cana Lyrics
1. O! come ye down to Cana,
And Christ's dear footprints trace,
For He is gone with Mary,
A marriage feast to grace.
How fair the happy concourse1
How bright the gay robes shine!
How joyous, too, the feasters!
But lo! there lacketh wine!
2. Soft speaks the kindly Jesus
To servants standing by:
Now fill these pots with water,
Which here all empty lie;
And bear ye to the ruler.
'Tis done at Jesus' sign,
And lo! the water limpid
Is changed to ripe red wine!
3. Then knowing not the marvel
Was wrought by Jesus' Word,
The ruler to the bridegroom stirred:
All men at the beginning
Their best wine give, but Thou
The richest, noblest, sweetest,
Hast kept back until now!
4. O! come ye down to Cana!
For lo! whate'er betide,
The Bridegroom now is Jesus,
The Church, His holy bride!
And He the living streamlet
From God's bright throne above,
Doth give as cheering wine-drops
In chalice of His Love!
