Oh, do not disturb
From the very first chapter
I was told I'd end up happily ever after
Mama couldn't read, so I never thought to ask her
I know her opinion would've been a main factor
And I owe a lot to her
List of things that I wish I could've bought for her
I'll leave the past untold, as the story unfolds
A happy ending's the only thing that I can offer her, uh
Can't do it first, do it better
Mama's pushing eighty, I really don't have forever
So I'm pushing eighty, pedal to the floor, cousin's Acura
It's now or never tomorrow it's going back to her
Thoughts moving on the back-burner
In the works, on the low, ever since last summer
Never thought I'd ever be such a fast learner
Being from a side street I know how to cut corners
Modern day middle class struggle
Singles in our wallets so we're always pulling doubles
Only making ends meet so the check ends when it greets
The mouths it has to feed, insurance and utilities
Problem with the American dream
Is that it mimics a scene I haven't seen
So if you happen to be from overseas
You'll discover that the theme is nowhere near reality, uh
Dad was born into poverty
Moved to the states, yea that man risked it all for me
And honestly, yea it kinda bothers me
For him to see me easily settle for mediocrity
Nah, this ain't how it oughta be
Nah, nah, this ain't how it oughta be
This ain't how I thought it'd be
But it's hard to be a first-class citizen with secondhand authority
