Sunday... man I can't believe it...
Another week just came and flew right on by
This new week won't be any easier
I got a lot to deal with... I don't think I can cope
All my close friends say I should try going back to church
I said I don't know, I'ma shoot for it
Let me turn this TV off... I'm going in
Let's go
Gotta wake and shave and take a bath
Slacks and a button-up, a blazer, Stacy Adams
Then buckle up and budget up enough time to
Allow the delay for gas, can't erase the past
But if you stray from the straight and narrow
You can make it back to salvation and
Take the sacred pathway through the tabernacle
Some would say the chapel is a haven
The place to travel to escape from the grasp of the enemy
And by the Holy Trinity, you break the shackles
Where the faithful gather for God's grace to convey
They praise and gratitude and celebrate the sabbath
From a distance, see the steeple
Up close see the people and at the entrance an attendant
Who hands you a program that you leaf through
And proceeds to lead you to the cathedral
The music will blast, a fugue with pizzazz
That's imbued with the brass for the jubilant mass
It's a joyful noise that makes lucifer sad
The flagbearer and the crucifer move from the back
As they lead the procession of choir, lay readers and reverend
And we genuflect in the ripple of heads for the cross as they walk up
A place for change, that's why they called it the altar
Prophecies and Psalms, tales of heroics
Fumbling the hymnal for the song but it feels like you know it
You stand up, you sit down, you stand up again
Sit down, now kneel, stand up; feels like aerobics
The Holy Ghost wrote canon that was handprinted
Transcended when man inherited the grand tenets
Had a pandemic now we back up in the sanctum with thanksgiving
See the grandparents with their hands tented?
It takes faith to believe what you don't see
Discipline to study and discover what you don't know
Piety to gather up your cross for the long road
Feel guilty when you don't go
Amen...
Amen
God is good, all the time
Everybody woke up and jumped in
They Sunday suits... cool
Everybody pulled up, everybody glowed up
And we all waiting on you...
Especially you
The candles were lit with care by acolytes
Those are the kids that wear the robes and
The older folks in the black and white
Are lay ministers and they read the scriptures, prayers
The bishop's chair, the flowers, linens and utensils
They're... all what the altar guild prepared
And above all this there's
A symbol of the ultimate sacrifice
Some people say YOLO but it happened twice
When Christ died, came back to life
And He arose as the Builder's heir
Now he's worthily magnified, praised as the Holy One
Stare as the cleric embraces the podium
Rapping 'bout church in the back of the church
While the pastor's at work, so there's both of us focused on
Passionate verses, interpreting chapters to masses
That search for they purpose, with gladness we serve
After the sermon, cats is affirming they faith with the Nicene Creed
That describes belief in the deity defined in three
Greet a neighbor with a hug and say
"May the Lord provide ye peace and blessings"
After confessions, it's welcomes and announcements
Any birthdays or anniversaries celebrated out of town
Well, you found out then
Round 'bout ten percent: that's what you put in that collection plate
At the offertory, a deposit surely
To uplift the service, but who deserves it?
Just drop it in the pot and give God the glory
Watch the sorting of consecrated gifts of the sacristy
A reenactment of the eve of the tragedy
Every move is made with gravity, as we
Remember the last of His feasts with His faculty
Bread that embodies the flesh of the Savior
Though holy, it's broken in pieces to feed you
The Blood of Christ is instinctive to drink with a sip
But you can intinct if you need to
Then retreat to the pew for prayer
As the music blares and folks are crooning, I'm moved to tears,
In a sea of post-Communion stares
I close my eyes and talk to God to soothe my fears
I pray for the strength and well-being of my loved ones
Near and dear to me and the people that I'm furthest from
Wisdom and courage when things become burdensome
Mercy and peace for the deceased and the world to come
A benediction then is given by the clergy,
One final hymn is sung as the procession is returning from
Their perch, where the candles were burning
But the fervency of worship transfers to each person once the service done
Now the work has begun,
Throw water on a seed and a tree's gon' grow
I'll be back next week and I'll save you a seat... front row
Feel guilty if you don't go
Amen...
Amen
God is good, all the time
Everybody woke up and jumped in
They Sunday suits... cool
Everybody pulled up, everybody glowed up
And we all waiting on you...
Can't forget about you
For the Lord says
Remember the sabbath and keep it holy
Unto him be the glory
In the church and in Christ Jesus
Throughout all generations
Amen
God is good, all the time
Everybody woke up and jumped in they
Sunday... SUITS... cool
Everybody pulled up, everybody glowed up
And we all waiting on...
Go.
