FIRST TIME I SAW THE PINES HANGIN' ON TO THAT RIDGELINE
THE MIST ROLLED IN BUT THE FOG BEGAN TO CLEAR
AND I'M STARING AT THE SUMMIT SOARING HIGH ABOVE THE GROUND
THERE MIGHT NOT BE A HEAVEN BUT I'M SEEING IT NOW
WHEN I HEAR THAT DISTANT THUNDER
AND THE SKY WAKES FROM ITS SLUMBER
ALL THE TROUBLES WASH AWAY IN THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
THE CLOUDS SHED ALL THEIR TEARS
AND IT TOOK SO MANY YEARS
ALL THAT REMAINS IS ME AND THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
THROUGH THE SHIFTING OF THE SANDS THE MOUNTAIN IT STILL STANDS
AND IT DON'T CARE BOUT TIME OR US OR CHANGE
AND IT MAKES ME FEEL SO SMALL BUT STILL CONNECTED TO IT ALL
LOOKIN' AT THE DARK CLOUDS AROUND THE RANGE
WHEN I HEAR THAT DISTANT THUNDER
AND THE SKY WAKES FROM ITS SLUMBER
ALL THE TROUBLES WASH AWAY IN THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
THE CLOUDS SHED ALL THEIR TEARS
AND IT TOOK SO MANY YEARS
ALL THAT REMAINS IS ME AND THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
WHEN I HEAR THAT DISTANT THUNDER
AND THE SKY WAKES FROM ITS SLUMBER
ALL THE TROUBLES WASH AWAY IN THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
THE CLOUDS SHED ALL THEIR TEARS
LIKE THEY HAVE FOR ALL THESE YEARS
AND WAY UP HERE THE TRUTH WILL STAKE ITS CLAIM
AND IT'S ALL JUST LIKE IT WAS BEFORE WE CAME
ALL THAT REMAINS IS THE COLD MOUNTAIN RAIN
