Joshua Uhlfelder - The Great Depression Lyrics

The Great depression- a catastrophe
Of economics, politics, and sociality
Four causes- individuality serve as no master
But all together they result in a disaster

They are
Charging tariffs Europe couldn't afford... and...
Too much post-war food production- had to be stored... and...
Folks went crazy with all their credit... and...
The wealthy had the money and refused to shed it

Now let's talk about the economic impacts
October 29th revealed the economic cracks
When big business failed, so did the bank
'29 to '33, 5000 banks did tank

People were frightened- to the bank they rushed
To gather their deposits- but they were crushed
The bank couldn't give them money- loaning it in large scale
So after a panic, the banks did fail

The Great Depression
Slowed progression
1929 to 1941
The fact is that the depression wasn't fun
Economic disaster
Nothing moved faster (except migration)
Agony is evident
And Hoover and Roosevelt are President

Farmers were forced to move to the city
After the Dust Bowl made all their crops ******
They left it all behind- their hearts a throb
Moving to urban places in hopes of a job

Little did they know the situation was as bad
For the unemployment rate was 25%- SAD
Those who were lucky enough to be hired
Were constantly in fear of getting fired

They also didn't earn as much as they did before
Played 29% less- Work was more of a chore
No more places to live 'cause folks couldn't pay their bills
They ended up on the streets in Hoovervilles

The Great Depression
Slowed progression
1929 to 1941
The fact is that the depression wasn't fun
Economic disaster
Nothing moved faster (except migration)
Agony is evident
And Hoover and Roosevelt are President

The little money people had was never to be spent
As deflation rose to 30%
So many problems- someone has to be pursuing
So what did the government happen to be doing?

Well...
Herbert Hoover was the president at first
When the stock market crash happened- though it wouldn't get worse
It continued to dive yet he refused to interject
Said it wasn't the government's business to go and get it checked

Eventually, he intervened- letting market climb
But it was too little too late because by that time
Hoover had lost support- Roosevelt took over fast
But we haven't gotten any further in history class

The Great Depression
Slowed progression
1929 to 1941
The fact is that the depression wasn't fun
Economic disaster
Nothing moved faster (except migration)
Agony is evident
And Hoover and Roosevelt are President
