My kid memories aren't all pastel colours
There are some dark lashes between
But I can't tell the hues when I look at you
And I don't want to know what that means
See I was a dark kid, always so frightened
I hid in my own shadow
But you went beyond that, to anger and more
To a place I wish I didn't know
Because in the Upside Down
The darkness won't let you come back out
My black dogs a bastard, nipping at my heels
A Lingering, Permanent stray
He's not always in step but when I think he's left
He'll show up again the next day
But yours is a blur, a constant friend
The leash burns deep in your hand
I strain to see around the weight on my chest
To see who is truly in command
Because in the Upside Down
The darkness won't let you come back out
It all looks the same, and in there lies the trick
When clouded with doubt
How can you know you've left when each side of the door
Says "The way out"
Because in the Upside Down
The darkness won't let you
Come back out
