She grew up listening to hymns
Learned to restrain every whim
No matter how hard she tried
In all their eyes it was sin
So they'd informed her they'd pray
But that she'd better obey
And as the church chimed, "Amen"
She fired right back at them
And she cried
Whatever happened to grace?
Lay down your stones
And put on the face of love
The face of love
She vowed to God that day
She'd never make someone else feel that way
And every time she forgave
The heaviness went away
One day on 5th and Main
She recognized and remembered his name
And all the pain returned
The things that she thought she'd unlearned
And she cried,
Whatever happened to grace?
Lay down your stones
And put on the face of love
The face of love
He gently reached for her hand
And said I'm sorry for being that man
I did not love myself
So how could I love anyone else
She looked him straight in the eye
Which reflected what can't be denied
He was truly set free
Forgiveness was meant to be
And she cried
What amazing grace!
I never thought I could touch the face of love
You are the face of love
What amazing grace!
We never thought we could touch the face of love
We are the face of love
