Stephen Pastel - I Started Painting Landscapes Lyrics
Official

[ Featuring Gavin Thomson ]

They had this rehearsal room in one of the archways near the train station
They're demolished now, so I can't say for sure exactly what it was
But every fifteen minutes, a train would pass overhead
Remember that for sure
The whole room would shake with this industrial noise
You can hear it on the early recordings
They said it added to the ambience
I always remembered they had this landscape painting on the wall
That seemed incongruous
But when I would go to rehearsal to hang out, there was always this impromptu audience
People skulking around, drinking and smoking while they played
And I would sit and stare at it, this forest scene
It was like I was imagining myself entering it
It was as if the music had made it open up
You know, like, it was alive?
This was only me probably, but
I would go wandering through the trees and the bushes along this path
It was always confused, like, it wasn't really happening
But I wasn't imagining it either
There was like a portal, you know?
Does that sound crazy?
And I never asked them about it
I kept it secret because I felt like I had discovered the real reason why they'd hung it there
It wasn't out of poor taste or ill advice, it was there to get inside
I can still see that path in my head right now
Patty would be playing this one chord on the guitar and he would keep on repeating it
And Richard was playing this mechanical rhythm in the drums
And Remy would be alternating between these two notes in the bass
And Lucas would step up to sing
He was so handsome back then
These thick lips, like, Bambi eyes
This long fringe
He'd step up to sing and his lyrics would be
Like, about one thing at a time, you know, like
Thinking something and then seeing something and then doing something
One thing would happen after the next
Like uh, an automatic voice that was played out without any personal volition
I mean, of course, they had that song, "Adherence," that song would keep going forever
Sometimes I would listen to it and and I would think, "Oh, my god"
"Everything is fixed, that path through the forest is real"
Mad stuff like that
