She saves all the messages
I've left on her machine
Says she plays them over and over
for the comfort that they bring
She missed my call this morning,
(It's another one she'll save)
I'll bet she's gone to talk to Daddy
and lay some flowers on the grave
She says she knows Dad isn't there but
it helps her to get by
My Mama's in the desert,
My Daddy's in the sky
Brother Randy has been so good to her
always got a joke or two
And no one laughs like Mama laughs
'Though her hearts been torn in two
Some days she seems past comforting,
Most nights don't bring relief
Wish I could carry all she bears
and hide her from her grief
And though her tears like rain go falling
it's still arid there and dry
My Mama's in the desert,
my Daddy's in the sky
And our Papa's up there waiting
I've seen him in a dream
And for all us desert nomads
there is a living spring
So Mama don't be crying,
we'll all get there by and by
Soon we'll leave our dry-bone deserts
to meet our Father in the sky
She says she knows Dad isn't there but
it helps her to get by
My Mama's in the desert
My Daddy's in the sky
My Mama's in the desert
My Daddy's in the sky
