In the Big Smoke it's 5.30pm
The weather croupier dealt an unfavourable hand
As they wrap up their Friday and head out in the rain
His cap on her head to shelter her hair
And they are strolling the streets
They've walked hundreds of times
And his music is bleeding from faraway pints
And they roam through art galleries
And her spirit breathes life
These cobbles mean freedom from their 9 to 5
The rain still drums on his head and his cap,
As they hurry for shelter, just down to the left
'Just walk a bit faster' and she poked at his chest
But she knows he won't budge, she knows him too well
A tease and a joke, a glance at her face
A touch on his shoulder, a smile on his face
A laugh and a sigh, acts as if she don't mind
A look at a future with no him by her side
And they enter their reign and she wipes off his face
As they head to the booth where the movies are playing
And she fixes her hair and takes off her tie
As he heads to the bar for his first round to buy
Drink after drink, time flows too fast
Inhibitions melt down like the ice in the glass
And they talk and they ponder about love and death
And they wave and they stutter as they head home to rest
But tonight is their last night
It's too soon for goodbyes
And the gods show some clemency
And they clear up the skies
As he walks her home safe
For the hundredth of times
She just stops and she drops
And looks up at the stars
In the madness and beauty
Of such a small act
His heart started pounding
Like drums on his chest
And they lay side by side
Their heads on their hands
Just to lift them off slightly
From the cold grey cement
And this bridge is their bed
And they talk and they bitch
And the moon above half
And their hearts twice as rich
But the time has now come
As they get up and speak
And he kisses her forehead
And walks out of his dream
A dream he had been dreaming
As she entered his life
A dream he has let go
But will still live inside
Our story comes to end right where it began
As he roams and he strolls through the realms of Dublin
But his queen is now sleeping and not by his side
The night is for dreamers, for lovers and goodbyes
Goodbye
