The walls of joy
Are full of cracks
Through which the sadness shows
For every smile
For every laugh
A stream of sorrow flows
For every kiss
A lover gives
Another sigh is knotted
And every bliss
That someone lives
For someone else is blotted
I saw a child
I saw a corpse
The two in grief united
I saw a bride
For whom the worst
Had always been decided
Oh joy that rides
The evening tide
That rises to disaster
We get thrown off
And climb back on
The horse we'll never master
I watched the walls
Of joy fall down
Into the blighted ocean
And all the shouts
Of glee and mirth
Were frozen into stone
Oh joy that was
And now is gone
Vanished is your number
But joy to come
In what wild sum
Will not disturb my slumber
