As the lashing of the rain cut me down
Through the wild fury of the summer storms
With luck I stumbled 'cross a lonesome farm
And pleaded that they put me up til dawn
It was then that I first set eyes on her
And I knew with no doubt that for sure
She was all that I had been looking for
All the while anyway
I watched as the sun began to sink
And spent the night in her sweet company
I looked into her weary roving eyes
And asked if she would come away with me
She said sir I'm afraid I've lead astray
But please say what you have to say
But just know in the morning you can't stay
Very long anyway
I begged and I pleaded to her please
My dear won't you leave here with me
I'll take you where the grass grows green
On the shores of sunny Italy
But she just smiled and looked the other way
Though I thought I heard a voice so far off say
We were bound to meet again some other day
Anyhow anyway
I wandered as restless as the tides
Trying hard to forget all the while
But no matter how ever hard I tried
I could never seem to get her off my mind
But I'll not wait like a horse that's gone lame
I'll cut off my hair and change my name
Cos I know that things won't ever be the same
Anymore anyway
And now as I'm going back
To that house in the lonely valley
I hope this time when we meet
That things will end differently
And I won't have to strain to look behind the vail
And ride that horse along the trail
Cos I need somewhere to pound my nails
Anywhere anyway
