Rosie lived with Jack in a two roomed flat
With their cat and without much to their name
Rosie had a slog of working three odd jobs
While Jack worked in selling picture frames
Oh my dear now don't you know
There's things in life you can't control at all
Oh my dear now it only goes to show
He'll never see the writing on the wall
When the banks collapsed and they gave Jack the sack
He needed other means for getting by
With nowhere else to turn he started working for the firm
They said "oh we have the perfect thing in mind"
Oh my dear why weren't you ever told
It's no fun in the stony lonesome's halls
Oh my dear now it only goes to show
He'll never see the writing on the wall
Through extortion, bribes and threats, bootlegging and loan-shark debts
And a secret gambling ring their wealth had grown
By greasing a few palms they passed below the police radar
And soon amassed an empire of their own
Ah what's a cat to do to get along and pay his dues in this here city
But maybe there's a better way of getting some money for getting by
After a job went wrong Jack felt the heat was on
And he knew they would soon run out of time
Making their escape as the law gave them chase
As they raced to get across the border line
Oh my dear now don't you know
The higher the further to fall
In a quick flash and blaze he was finally blown away
And now he sees the writing on the wall
