Well at first we didn't know if it'd still rain on Thursday
So we decided to wait for one more sundown
We woke up to find the lazy beasts feast on pumpkin and hay
Watching quietly as we planned where and how
When we loaded the gun right beside where she grazed
And the brisk morning wind blew thru Lompoc town
If only all the world's apologies forgave these meek hearts
When the canyon hills echoed with that screaming sound
Of all the pains in this world guilt hurts the worst
Today we shot Daisy down
One man brought the tractor to their cage
One man sang a song while kicking the ground
Another man sharpened his grandfather's blade
And I just stood and watched with both my knees bound
"It's sudden death if you do it the right way,
A shot of twenty two right between the two brows"
If only all the world's apologies forgave these meek hearts
When the canyon hills echoed with that screaming sound
Of all the pains in this world guilt hurts the worst
Today we shot Daisy down
We lured the first one out with some food for bait
And the second one surely tagged along
But daisy wouldn't come she just remained in her place
As she sniffed the trouble with her sensitive snout
When we knocked down the pigs with whom she had played
Knowing it was coming poor Daisy frowned
If only all the world's apologies forgave these meek hearts
When the canyon hills echoed with that screaming sound
Of all the pains in this world guilt hurts the worst
Today we shot Daisy down
She screamed as she bled and she tried to run away
So we blocked her passage and held her down
She kicked my forearm with enough strength to deface it
Finally we cut her throat to bleed her out
But the bullet was too small to pierce through our prey
And knock down a hog of four hundred pounds
If only all the world's apologies forgave these meek hearts
When the canyon hills echoed with that screaming sound
Of all the pains in this world guilt hurts the worst
Today we shot Daisy down
We were four men who came from our own four separate ways
With respect to the lives of every being around
And we know that a trigger pulled in haste
An animal shivers with its spirit cast down
Breathing heavily the five of us remained
Not alive or dead I cried my eyes out
If only all the world's whiskey would've eased our minds
When the night hit the dawn with no sleep in sight
Of all the pains in this world guilt hurts the worst
Today we shot daisy down
