The music in church is different now, from what it was long ago
My father was a song leader, and that's how I know
Pianos and organs were what was usually played
Till brother James got out his old guitar and walked up to the stage
He would walk up to the pulpit and say hello to everyone
You could tell by the look in his eyes, that this was his way of fun
He would ask for the Lord's blessing so he would get nothing wrong
Then he would start to play the Lord's holy songs
The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, or In the Sweet By and By
These were the songs he often played, and this was the reason why
I've played these songs many times and seen many souls saved
I've seen people jump up and down and their arms begin to wave
I've seen people down on their knees, praying to the Lord
So I just kept on pickin' on this old guitar
This old guitar don't play country, and it don't play rock n roll
It makes music for the Lord, searching for them lost souls
"Heavenly music is what it makes," is what my dad would often say
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, it don't matter what you play
