Evan - Not in My City Lyrics

Oh no

The next days after fun in track 3
I was on Twitter, "Something's bothering me"
A couple more black men shot down
In separate cities, it elongated my frown
Minneapolis and Baton Rouge
I hate to say it, but this stuff ain't news
The next night, amid protest and defending
Saw on the social that my city was trending
Police officers shot and killed
This the example that we trying to build
I don't think so
So don't blink, bro
Our arts district dwarfs the one in San Francisco
I'd ask the guy what he thought, but he's dead
I could say more, but
Why are we so gung-ho to bust heads
When with both parties, everyone ends up dead
I mean, how can we know what love is worth
When we live in a world that is practically fueled by hurt -- and Ramen

Okay, I just got back from my Europe vacation
KISS FM just bleeped out "bullet" on 'Ride' on their station
This morning, my city's in mourning
Protest is good until there's sides, and one's scoring
I got puns, and college funds, y'all got guns
I look up to the Texas Twins as the ones
We all got crazys, they not seen daily
But shooting folk ain't neva an option, not maybe
I wanna know what you were thinking
Because a shooting like this needs more than binge-drinking
We're already known for the Kennedys
Shooting the PoPo, it ain't no remedy

I understand that you're mad, but ye'ain't gotta act like that
I understand that you're mad, but ye'ain't gotta act like that
Understand you're mad, but get a gat and shoot back
Naaawo. Ye'ain't gotta be like that. Naw, Naw

Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city
Not in my city (Yeah, My people, tell me...)
Not in my city
Not in my city (Please)
No, Not in my city (How can we say it was worth the fight)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (When even after MLK, everything is still black and White?)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (Nobody in this room is right)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (If you oppress, or connect that oppression to taking one's life)
Not in my city
Not in my city (Aight?)
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (Yeah. Yeah)

I understand where you come from, Mr. Chism
Lost a few lives, took a few just to get 'em
But generalization, putting them in a prism
Is the epitome of reverse racism
You assume they're all the same, when they're not
You tell them every house cooks with a different pot
Well theirs, too. And I say this with love, boo
Nothing changes when you play by the same rules
It doesn't matter if you fare better in pools
It doesn't matter if you're better at soul food
Or if you're eating tofu, or rich enough for Nobu
Please love each other; that's the thing that's most noble
Sorry if this hurts but it's only the truth
You get stabbed in the back, try to show 'em some ruth
If Beyoncé was here with me, we'd say, "Not in my state, bro!"
I never get mad at my city, but this hurts, doh
I'm not even mad
Or disappointed, man
"You get shot, get the glock" so I understand
Say you got stabbed in the back again
It's clear to see you ain't right within
You put it down, sign it off with a pen
Then guess what, it never happens again

If we united, then you know we can fight it
If we united, then you know we can fight it
If we united, then you know we can fight it, got the whole Cowboys Stadium saying
Not in my city

Not in my city
Not in my city
(Yeah, all the haters take heed, we don't need that kind of negativity in my city
Not in my city
You could miss me with negativity in my city)
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (Yeah, yeah. We massed up now!)
Not in my city (Yeah, My people, tell 'em...)
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (The long term damage we sustained is slight)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (We coming up from here, and to the world, we gonna be a light)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (The fact that the negatives can only twirl)
Not in my city
Not in my city
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (Only serves to further prove we're the best dang city in the world)
Not in my city
Not in my city (The World)
Not in my city
No, Not in my city (Yeah, Yeah. Yeah!)

Yeah

That's all I'll say about it
I'll always love you, Dallas
We just gotta do better
It's not just a black thing
It's not just a white thing
It's a human thing
This ain't the first time one has discriminated
Against another equal to them for some notion of superiority or supremacy
This ain't the first time
It ain't gotta be us against them
Or them against us
It can be the whole of us... against the negative aspects adapted to one's mind
All races, united against unjust treatment of the billions of members of this big human family
That's what true harmony is
We are one of the world's newest upcoming and budding metropolises
Diverse almost as New York City even today
We will be better
I love you Dallas
I'll never leave you

Happy 4th of July

Might wanna turn the volume button up, fam
