Let me tell you about my alma mater
The colors are black and blue
The mascot's a clown singin' sad songs
To anyone who'll listen like you
I've studied the words of great men
Like George Jones Hank Williams John Prine
I've handed in many a paper
To probation officers on time
The high cost of low pay I've reckoned
And writing on the wall I read
I can show you on my map dark places
'Cause I've earned my blues degree
I remember playing on the sports team
I was a runner from the boys in blue
And I was active in the debate club
Just ask every lover I knew
I've stayed up and pulled all-nighters
Reading for hours sad faces
Studying beer labels and lighters
Pretzels jokers and aces
The high cost of low pay I've reckoned
And writing on the wall I read
I can show you on my map dark places
'Cause I've earned my blues degree
I rolled up my diploma and smoked it
And drank all my credits away
I've opened my mind and soaked it
With the knowledge of what I've paid
Homecoming is held in a bar room
And most of my teachers are in jail
But they taught me many ways
To screw up my life and fail
Now you know all about my alma mater
Where the colors are black and blue
And the mascot's a clown singing sad song
To fellow students like you
The high cost of low pay I've reckoned
And writing on the wall I read
I can show you on my map dark places
'Cause I've earned my blues degree
