On April 21, 2024 Texas Tech student Hudson Westbrook went viral on TikTok after previewing his song "Take it Slow,” which garnered 2.2 million views. Seventy days later, he is headlining Lubbock's Cotton Fest, a music event that brings in nearly 10 thousand people each year.
After becoming an overnight sensation, Westbrook, a second-year from Stephenville, capitalized on his newfound career and performed his first show at Cook's Garage on June 1, with one officially released song to his discography.
"The second I realized it was a career was when I played here at Cook's, and people were singing my lyrics back to me with my song being out for two days,” Westbrook said. "That was — that was one of the most surreal moments in my entire life.”
Westbrook said after going viral, his follower counts have gone from 8,000 to 150,000 over the past few months, and he has begun traveling. The night before Cotton Fest, Westbrook played in Dallas with singer William Beckmann.
On Friday, Westbrook came back to where he first performed at Cook's Garage for the annual Cotton Fest. Hosted by country singer William Clark Green, the festival serves as a community event to fundraise for West Texas farmers through the High Cotton Relief fund.
For Westbrook, it's a chance to do what he loves while giving back to a cause.
"I can play guitar all day and lose track of time,” Westbrook said. "That's like the only thing that I do that I actually enjoy, and for other people to relate to it and to love it too, that's the main thing to me — to write something that means something to someone else, you know.”
