Jaherus - A Port, A Lighthouse And My Story: Part I (The Waiting) Lyrics

Here, where one lives from the sea, I was taught to be stronger than others, not to show my femininity, I became "the iron lady", the manager of a bar. I never believed in promises, but now, staring at the moon high above the sea, I sigh for those who do not return.

He was the only carpenter who couldn't swim, a boy who didn't seem to stand out from the rest. One night, in my tavern, when he went to deliver a couple of chairs, he fixed his deep gaze upon me and I made an ugly expression with my face; I must admit, he was neither tall nor gallant but he was very insistent indeed, since he went to the bar every night, only to ask my name.

I remember how my father once kicked him for throwing beer at a drunken sailor who proclaimed "the most beautiful women are found only in Prague", a naut who later with his friends gave him a beating. I found him the next morning amongst the garbage, half unconscious and whispering "my iron lady is the most beautiful". I won't deny it, at that moment I felt a flutter in my heart that incited me to take him to my house on the hill to cure his blows (luckily, I had gotten used to carrying the occasional lump in the bar, so it was no problem), while my father was still in the old lighthouse.

And Mario, as foolish as ever, continued to go to the tavern, gifting me with little wooden figurines, saying he was eternally in debt. Then, with gestures that for the rest would be insignificant, he gradually gained my elusive love, until finally in front of a sunset atop the lighthouse, I told him: My name is Rose (yes, a rose but with thorns) and soon after, he gave me an engagement ring.

However, my father wanted a wealthy man for me, "not a ragged beggar without a penny", words that cut him deep inside, so on impulse, he decided to go to sea to earn his riches and form a family, "even with that old man".

More now that five years have passed since his departure, everyone in the bar keeps telling me to forget him and take off my ring, to stop waiting, that because he is weak the sea swallowed him up, and to marry some new suitor -that is never lacking.

I foresee yet another winter without him returning, and I have come to realise that the cold feels terrible, I'm a little tired and the doctors tell me nothing, but I can see my father's concern.

It seems that it is much more serious than I thought, I cough a little blood and I don't have the strength to get up and go to the beach. Meanwhile, my father goes from doctor to doctor, but they only whisper in a low voice "it is the same illness as her mother had once suffered from and there is nothing we can do."

While the pain numbs me, "my love, where are you, why don't you come back?" is all I can think.

I feel the end coming and I ask my father to leave his pride behind, to record on this ring a few words, making him promise to give it to you when you return from sea.

Forgive me, but I can no longer wait for you at the beach or the bar, I must close my eyes to join the stars that we so very much liked to admire, from there, I will pray for you, my love, to find the strength to continue and be happy.
