There's a little town a ways away
Where the people work all night and day
And there's a carpenter and his firstborn son
With no riches where they come from
Now this old man he built a life
And showed his son what working hard was like
But he knew his boy would soon fulfill
More than wood or stones could build
And why do I still try to gain approval from the world
When this boy earned a wage that'd only last one day
But 30 years he made sure everything he built was great
And when I count all the earthly works I've done
I just look back at that carpenter son
Now this boy he grew up to be
The towns best worker you ever did see
He didn't wear no crown of gold
But in all he did, God's love was told
And why do I still try to gain approval from the world
When this boy earned a wage that'd only last one day
But 30 years he made sure everything he built was great
And when I count all the earthly works I've done
I just look back at that carpenter son
Now did he ever look at his calloused hands
And feel the nails that they'd withstand
And I wonder when he smelled the trees
If he got a little glimpse of calvary
To think of all the work He did
To be hung up for a crime that he didn't commit
And I asked him was it worth the pain
To work that hard but get nothing
But he looked down and he said my name
Why do you still try to gain approval from this world
When all the work you're doing is to bless my name
And when you feel you have to be somebody to be great
Just remember where I first came from
I spent 30 years as a carpenters son
