It was a hot afternoon in the middle of June
When the cops broke down my door and burst into my room
They took me to the station for interrogation
Played good cop bad cop like it was their vocation

They kept grilling me, for my alibi
To make the nightmare go away
I gave them my alibi

I said, I got to the pub about a quarter past seven
There was a Led Zeppelin tribute band playing Stairway to Heaven
I left there around ten, went for a walk to clear my head
And when I got home I went straight to bed

I spent the night alone, that's my alibi
Take it or leave it

The cop said, I don't understand, it doesn't make sense
You're gonna go to jail if that's your defence
I can place you at the scene if you know what I mean
And you'll do time when I connect you to the crime

You must be joking, if that's your alibi
I'm telling you
You don't have a cast iron alibi

Things were looking bad, I needed to leave
Every word I said was true, but they wouldn't believe me
Were they trying to stitch me up, was it paranoia
I thought, if they don't let me go I'll demand a lawyer

I said, you're clearly mistaken, you've got the wrong guy
My story won't be shaken
I'm sticking to my alibi

He said, you infer it wasn't you, but they all say that
You'll have to prove your case as a matter of fact
Forensics will catch you, there'll be DNA
And CCTV evidence will put you away

I don't think much of your chances if you hold to your alibi
It's only a matter of time
Before we break your alibi

A man entered the room, the cops began to converse
All three stared at me and I feared the worst
When out of the blue, he said we suspect someone new
A witness has come forward who swears it wasn't you

You're free to go, we no longer need your alibi
As I left the station
I told them exactly where to shove my alibi
