There's a cruel cruel villain on the loose
Who brings a garbage bag to meadows under the glistening moon
He beckons in hundreds
Of slumbering and snoozing butterflies
Bag over his shoulder, he moves into the night
And he releases those butterflies inside me
To forever live imprisoned and caged
Their wings' tired flapping turning every word I say
Every word I say into a hurricane
Now I live unsure if cursed or gifted
But then I see your shining smile
And like a bomb going off or something
Those butterflies take flight
Holding your hand sets off a tidal wave inside me
They've inhabited my esophagus so I can't even speak
They're planting eggs inside my lungs and I can hardly breathe
Pretty sure they've inhabited my somatosensory cortex
Modifying everything I feel
When I'm around you I don't know what to do
And I don't get how stomach acid doesn't do them in
It stumps my mind, my darling, how butterflies survive
Any time at all without anything they need
My veins aren't branches, my heart is not a tree
Take flight, my little butterfly
You turn me into a cartoon villain
Who wants to trap those butterflies inside
But when I see you, I let them fly out of my ears
I don't want those poor butterflies to die
So take flight
