Fascinating Rhythm

Got a little rhythm, a rhythm, a rhythm
That pit-apats through my brain;
So darn persistent,
The day isn't distant
When it'll drive me insane.
Comes in the morning
Without any warning,
And hangs around me all day.
I'll have to sneak up to it
Someday, and speak up to it.
I hope it listens when I say
Fascinating Rhythm,
You've got me on the go!
Fascinating Rhythm,
I'm all a-quiver.
What a mess you're making!
The neighbors want to know
Why I'm always shaking
Just like a flivver.
Each morning I get up with the sun
Start a-hopping,
Never stopping
O find at night no work has been done.
I know that
Once it didn't matter
But now you're doing wrong
When you start to patter
I'm so unhappy.
Won't you take a day off?
Decide to run along
Somewhere far away off
And make it snappy!
Oh, how I long to be the man I used to be!
Fascinating Rhythm,
Oh, won't you stop picking on me?

Oh Lady be Good!

(Written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin)
Listen to my tale of woe,
It's terribly sad but true,
All dressed up, no place to go
Each evening I'm awfully blue.
I must win some winsome miss (or /I know I'm a winsome miss)
Can't go on like this,
I could blossom out I know,
Which somebody just like you. so...
Oh sweet and lovely,
Lady be good,
Oh lady be good to me.
I am so awfully misunderstood,
So lady be good, to me.
Oh, please have some pity
I'm all alone in this big city.
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good... to me.
Oh sweet and lovely lady, be good.
Oh lady, be good to me!
I am so awfully misunderstood,
So, lady be good to me.
This is tulip weather -
So let's put two and two together.
I tell you
I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So, lady be good, to me.

The Half of It Dearie Blues

(Written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin)
Each time you trill a song with Bill or look at Will
I get a chill, I'm gloomy
I won't recall the names of all the men who fall
It's all appalling to me
Of course, I really cannot blame them a bit
For you're a hit where're you flit
I know it's so, but dearie, oh!
You'll never know the blues that go right through me
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
The trouble is you have so many from whom to choose
If you should marry Tom, Dick, or harry,
Life would be the bunk, I'd become a monk
I've got the you-don't know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!
To Bill and Ben I'd pay attention now and then
But really men would bore me
When I'd begun to think I'd run and be a nun
I met the one man for me
And now just when the sun is starting to beam
Along comes a girl, zip goes a dream!
What will I do away from you?
I feel the future will be blue and stormy
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
It may be my heart isn't broken, but there's a bruise.
Through you I've known some days that were lonesome
Though you say that i'm flirting all the time
I've got the you-don-t know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
Oh, how i wish you'd drop an anchor and end your cruise
You're just a duffer who makes me suffer
All the younger set says your heart's to let
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!

Little Jazz Bird

(Written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin)
Into a cabaret
One fatal day
A little songbird flew
Found it so very gay
He thought he'd stay
Just to get a bird's eye view
When he heard the jazz band playing
He was happy as a lark
To each measure he kept swaying
And he stayed 'til after dark
Then back to the land he knew
Thrilled through and through
He sailed on in the air
Called all the other birds
And in these words
Started gurgling then and there
I'm a little jazz bird
And I'm telling you to be one too
For a little jazz bird
Is in heaven when it's singin' blue
I say it with regret
But you're out of date
You ain't heard nothing yet
'Til you syncopate
When the going is rough
You will find your troubles all have flown
If you warble your stuff
Like the moanin' of a saxophone
Just try my recipe
And I'm sure you'll agree
That a little jazz bird
Is the only kind of bird to be

Who Takes Care of the Caretakers Daughter?

(Written by Chick Endor)
Say, who takes care of the caretaker's daughter
While the caretaker's busy taking care?
Marconi made the telegraph
And Dempsy is the champ I know that
Babe Ruth makes home runs
And that Cleopatra was a vamp.
I know that Spark Plug is a horse
I'm a smart guy, there's no doubt.
But there's one thing that I don't know
And I'm dying to find out:
Who takes care of the caretaker's daughter
While the caretaker's busy taking care?
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
I know that the caretaker must take care
And while he's taking care, she's alone somewhere.
Who takes care of the caretaker's daughter
While the caretaker's busy taking care?
While the caretaker's busy taking care
I wonder who takes care of his daughter.
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
I wonder who cares for the caretaker's daughter
Who checks and sees if she does like she ought'er.
While the caretaker's busy taking care
I wonder who takes care of his daughter?
I know that chickens lay the eggs
And milk comes from a cow.
I know that money comes from banks
Because I'm smart that way some how. I
know there ain't no Santa Claus
So that proves I'm not so slow.
But at night I can not sleep
Cause there's one thing I don't know.
Who watches the nightwatchman's daughter
While the nightwatchman's busy watching night
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
I know that the nightwatchman must watch night
But who watches her to see if all's right?
Who watches the nightwatchman's daughter
While the nightwatchman's busy watching night?
Who tends the doortender's daughter
While the doortender's busy tending door?
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee, that's what worries me.
I know that the door tender must tend door
And that he goes to work about half past four.
Who tends door for the doortender's daughter
While the doortender's busy tending door?
Who keeps house for the housekeeper's daughter
While the housekeep's busy keeping house?
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
I know that the housekeeper must keep house
And when rats have a child they call it a mouse.
Who keeps house for the housekeeper's daughter
While the housekeep's busy keeping house?
Who oversees the overseer's daughter
When the overseer goes to oversee?
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
I know that the overseer must oversee
And you can't play tag with a bumble-bee.
But who sees the overseer's daughter
While the overseer's gone to oversee.
Who makes the dressmaker's daughter
While the dressmaker's busy making dresses?
Gee, oh gosh, oh gee; that's what worries me.
Who makes the daughter while he makes the dresses?
I know she's alright, she's just full of yeses.

Swiss Miss

(Written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin)
Up on the top of a snow-covered mountain
There lived an Alpine miss
And oh, what a sweet little miss was this
We mean this little Swiss miss
While down in the valley below (Ho-ho)
Lived a boy who loved her so (Ho-ho)
He loved her with all his might
He loved her day and night
And every night just to see this miss
He used to risk his scalp
For the house where she lived was away up high
And the poor guy didn't know how to fly
So he jumped from alp to alp
What a chump (What a chump)
To jump (To jump)
From alp to alp
And then beneath her balcony
He used to stand around and try to make a hit with her
And he would yodel, "O-lay-eee-tee"
That's the Swiss idea of a melody
And oh, what a yodeling fool was he
He shook a wicked yodel
And one night as he stood there
The lights were very dim
While leaning out too far across her balcony
She fell for him
He sat with his arms around her
Until the night was gone
And here's the way they carried on
He said, "Dear I think you're just as sweet as you can be
You're like a cake of sweet Swiss chocolate to me"
She said, "Oh, my loving one, your talk I can't resist
I hope you're as steady as the Swiss watch ticking on your wrist"
He said, "How I yearn for you, I burn for you, I do! I do!
Oh, lady, oh, I swear it on my knees
My love for you is just as strong as a piece of Sweitzer cheese

Lady, Be Good! (title sometimes presented with an exclamation point) is a musical written by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson with music by George and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was first presented on Broadway in 1924; the West End production followed in 1926.

The story of the musical is about a brother and sister who are out of money; both are eager to sacrifice themselves to help the other. This was the first Broadway collaboration of the Gershwin brothers, and the Astaire siblings play a brother-sister dance team.
