Lainey Wilson - Whirlwind Lyrics

Keep Up With Jones

Last night I felt like a two-dollar pistol
This morning I feel like I got shot
Hair of the dog says wet my whistle
But I don't know if that's a good idea or not

I could get up on a little wild hair, white lightnin'
Do a little two-lane John-Deere ridin'
Lead me to a neon sign and the race is on
I've been known to play possum on a barstool sittin'
Jukebox gold and the whole room spinnin'
Livin' in the middle of a country western song
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones

Last night I knew what not to do
I just don't know half of what I did
I thought I'd try to fill them shoes
Turns out them boots are too damn big, yeah

I could get up on a little wild hair, white lightnin'
Do a little two-lane John-Deere ridin'
Lead me to a neon sign and the race is on
I've been known to play possum on a barstool sittin'
Jukebox gold and the whole room spinnin'
Livin' in the middle of a country western song
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones

I can't keep up
I can't keep up

Yeah, today I'm moving real slow
So tonight, I'll be a no show
Then again, I just might go

And get up on a little wild hair, white lightnin'
Do a little two-lane John-Deere ridin'
Lead me to a neon sign and the race is on
I've been known to play possum on a barstool sittin'
Jukebox gold and the whole room spinnin'
Livin' in the middle of a country western song
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones
I can't keep tryin' to keep up with Jones, Jones, Jones

(Last night, I felt like a two-dollar pistol)
(This morning, I feel like I got shot)

Country's Cool Again

I was born in boots on humble ground
These kinda roots, yeah, they sure don't grow out
Yeah, even in a guitar town
My crooked drawl, the way I sung
My mama's genes sure stuck out like a thumb
In a Metro City crowd

Oh me, oh my, how things have changed
And I can't believe my eyes these days

Everybody wanna be a cowboy
Drive a jon boat, whip a John Deere
Everybody want a backwoods front porch
With a tub full of iced-down beer
Must be something in the water flowing out of the holler
Blue collar must've caught a new wind
Doggone, dadgum it, didn't see that coming
Country's cool again

Once you get a taste, you'll lick the spoon
Learn every word to The Dance and Neon Moon
And next thing you know
You'll hang a swing on a piece of land
Start sayin' things like hell naw, hot damn
Yeah, and if you dip your toe
You'll get bit by the bug and wanna wait in line
And that's the kind of trend, oh, that I could get behind

Everybody wanna be a cowboy
Drive a jon boat, whip a John Deere
Everybody want a backwoods front porch
With a tub full of iced-down beer
Must be something in the water flowing out of the holler
Blue collar must've caught a new wind
Doggone, dadgum it, didn't see that coming
Country's cool again (woo, yeah)

Cool, cool, cool, cool
Country's cool again
Cool (cool), cool (cool), cool (cool), cool
Country's cool again
I said cool (cool), cool (cool), cool (cool), cool
Country's cool again
Cool (cool), cool (cool), cool (cool), cool
Country's cool again

Everybody wanna be a cowboy
Drive a jon boat, whip a John Deere
Everybody want a backwoods front porch
With a tub full of iced-down beer
Must be something in the water flowing out of the holler
Blue collar must've caught a new wind
Y'all hop in the back, how 'bout that?
'Cause country's cool again
Ain't that some shit? I found a few hits
'Cause country's cool again
So cool again

Good Horses

[ Featuring Miranda Lambert ]

If there's a green pasture, I wanna be in it
I'm a wild, wildflower just a-ready for the picking, ooh
Thirty-one years is a long time coming
Feet off the ground, but I'm a-still running, ooh

I don't need a map, I don't need a road
I don't need a fence, I just need to roam
If you wanna love me, you don't need a rope
You just need to know
Good horses come home

Mockingbirds singing, hummingbirds humming
Searching for a song, so I keep on strumming, ooh
Come a long way since I left Louisiana
My dream tied on like a red bandana, ooh

I don't need a map, I don't need a road
I don't need a fence, I just need to roam
If you wanna love me, you don't need a rope
You just need to know
Good horses come home

They always come home

Blame it on my bloodline, blame it on my daddy
Blame it on the highway under my hemi
Baby, just remember when you start to miss me

I don't need a map, I don't need a road
I don't need a fence, I just need to roam
If you wanna love me, you don't need a rope
You just need to know

I don't need a compass, I don't need a saddle
Let go of the reins, baby, let me unravel
If you wanna love me, you don't need a rope
You just need to know
Good horses come home (good, good, good horses)
Good horses come home (good, good, good horses)

Yeah, boy, won't you give me some slack?
They might run for the hills but they always come back (always come back)
Yeah, boy, won't you give me some slack?
They might run for the hills but they always come back
Good, good, good horses
They always come home (good, good, good horses)
Mm, they always come home (good, good, good horses)

Broken Hearts Still Beat

Old trucks don't run if they got no gas in it
Can't play a popped flat top string
What's a pasture with no green grass in it?
A songbird with no song to sing?

Cup won't buzz without a little sour mash in it
Can't pray a prayer without Amen
Work don't work without your back in it
Flat tires, they don't spin

But broken hearts still beat
And that's what you showed me
I thought if you'd ever let me go
That'd be the end of the end of my rope
It ain't good as new
And boy, thanks to you
It may never be the way it used to be
But broken hearts still beat

My smile's got a little bit less ear to ear in it
Bed's got a little more room
Fridge has got a little more beer in it
Now that there's no you
And even though it's black and blue

Broken hearts still beat
And that's what you showed me
I thought if you'd ever let me go
That'd be the end of the end of my rope
It ain't good as new
And boy, thanks to you
It may never be the way it used to be
But broken hearts still beat

Still tickin', still kickin', still breathin'
Still pumpin', still runnin', still dreamin'
Thought it might stop when you tore off leavin'
Guess it took that to see

Broken hearts still beat
And that's what you showed me
I thought if you'd ever let me go
That'd be the end of the end of my rope
It ain't good as new
And boy, thanks to you
It may never be the way it used to be
But broken hearts still beat, oh
Broken hearts still beat, oh

Whirlwind

I was a lone wolf
Had my own back
Climbin' that mountain, only voice howlin' was my own pack
I was a lone star
Shootin' for the moon
But I finally found a rebel who's on the same level
When I found you

We're a whirlwind
Cuttin' through a Texas town
Yeah, this funnel wouldn't be near as fun
Without you spinnin' 'round

Yeah, we're always on the move at a daredevil's speed
Runnin' with the buzzards and the tumbleweeds
We're a whirlwind
But baby, lovin' you's a breeze

Yeah, it's a long road
It's a rat race
But you keep my head cool
You keep my heart full on a half tank
I was one set of tracks, a million miles an hour
But two palominos is more horsepower

We're a whirlwind
Cuttin' through a Texas town
Yeah, this funnel wouldn't be near as fun
Without you spinnin' 'round

Yeah, we're always on the move at a daredevil's speed
Runnin' with the buzzards and the tumbleweeds
We're a whirlwind
But baby, lovin' you's a breeze
Lovin' you's a breeze

We're a whirlwind
Cuttin' through a Texas town
Yeah, this funnel wouldn't be near as fun
Without you spinnin' 'round and around and around

Yeah, we're always on the move at a daredevil's speed
Runnin' with the buzzards and the tumbleweeds
We're a whirlwind
But baby, lovin' you's a breeze

Lovin' you's a breeze

Call A Cowboy

If there's a job that needs done
Or a horse to be broke
If there's a drink that needs drunk
Or a Red that needs smoked
Call a cowboy

If there's some boots to be scuffed
Or pearls to get snapped
You need a four-wheel drive truck
With a chain on the back
Call a cowboy

You best be bankin' on him
Hangin' on for more than eight seconds
He's rock steady, loaded, locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He's red, white and blue
Tried and true, like the grit in his voice
That's what you call a cowboy

If there's a door to be held
A wildflower to be picked
If there's a fire to be felt
In a straight whiskey kiss
Call a cowboy

You best be bankin' on him
Hangin' on for more than eight seconds
He's rock steady, loaded, locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He's red, white and blue
Tried and true, like the grit in his voice
That's what you call a cowboy

Oh, hey, lucky me
When I'm a long, long ways from home
I get to call him my own

You best be bankin' on him
Hangin' on for more than eight seconds
He's rock steady, loaded, locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He's red, white and blue
Tried and true like the grit in his voice
That's what I call my cowboy

Hang Tight Honey

I got a bus 'fore I got a house 'cause
That's what dreams make you do
Hittin' them neon honky-tonks
To play a two step or two
Two hundred days to a hundred towns
Bringing boots to a sawdust floor
While this six-string calls my name, baby
I'll be missing yours

Hang tight, honey, I'm a white line running
Down a dream on a long lost highway
Me and this band playing one night stands
For some fans getting straight up sideways
But baby, I miss your blue-collar kiss
Just one more day to get through
Hang tight, honey got a pocket full of money
And I'm headed straight home to you

Yeah, you can't hold me and I can't hold you
From two time zones away
When you're clocking out, yeah, I'm clocking in
Getting ready to hit the stage
Just know they're singing along to all them songs I wrote about you
And I'll be saving all my loving for you come sunday afternoon

Hang tight, honey, I'm a white line running
Down a dream on a long lost highway
Me and this band playing one night stands
For some fans getting straight up sideways
But baby, I miss your blue-collar kiss
Just one more day to get through
Hang tight, honey, got a pocket full of money
And I'm headed straight home to you

Yeah (yeah, yeah)
I'm comin' home to you, baby

Hang tight, honey
Every good run comes to an end
Hang tight, honey
'Til I'm in your arms again

Hang tight, honey, I'm a white line running
Down a dream on a long lost highway
Me and this band playing one night stands
For some fans getting straight up sideways
But baby, I miss your blue-collar kiss
Just one more day to get through
Hang tight, honey, got a pocket full of money
And I'm headed straight home to you

Bar in Baton Rouge

Got a death grip on this can
And I already killed a few
And just like my last beer
I'm empty, cold and blue

Sitting in this juke joint
In a cowboy-killer cloud
My head is north of Telluride
While it's all goin' south

I ain't nowhere near the Rockies or the Colorado sky
Got a heart that's got a mind to drink the Pontchartrain bone dry
The more I drink about it, the more I'm silver bulletproof
Steady staring at these mountains in a bar in Baton Rouge

It don't snow in Louisiana
But I wouldn't be surprised
If I crushed a couple more
There'd be a couple feet outside
Hell, it just might stick tonight

I ain't nowhere near the Rockies or the Colorado sky
Got a heart that's got a mind to drink the Pontchartrain bone dry
The more I drink about it, the more I'm silver bulletproof
Steady staring at these mountains in a bar in Baton Rouge

The good thing about rock bottom
Is up's the only way
I'm about to open up a can of healing this heartbreak

I ain't nowhere near the Rockies or the Colorado sky
Got a heart that's got a mind to drink the Pontchartrain bone dry
The more I drink about it, the more I'm silver bulletproof
Steady staring at these mountains in a bar in Baton Rouge
Sittin' 'round halfway up these mountains in a bar in Baton Rouge

I can't move a mountain
But I can sure as hell move on
Move on, move on, move on, move on
Move on, move on, hey

Counting Chickens

Far as I know you ain't bought a diamond
You ain't sat my daddy down and asked if it's alright
I don't mean to jump the gun on perfect timing
But if you brought up Vegas, I'd be on a plane tonight

I'm already counting chickens pecking corn in our backyard
Hanging up a frame with both our names cross stitched in a heart
Might be off my rocker dreaming 'bout a hilltop front porch view
Baby, maybe cart and horsing ain't the smartest thing to do
'Cause they ain't even hatched yet, but my eggs are in one basket
And I'm loving counting chickens with you

Tell my heart to slow down but it's tripping
I can't help but be full steam ahead and halfway down the road
Boy, I'd be fibbing if I told ya that I didn't
Have a laundry list of baby names that I saved in my phone

I'm already counting chickens pecking corn in our backyard
Hanging up a frame with both our names cross stitched in a heart
Might be off my rocker dreaming 'bout a hilltop front porch view
Baby, maybe cart and horsing ain't the smartest thing to do
'Cause they ain't even hatched yet, but my eggs are in one basket
And I'm loving counting chickens with you

Oh, and I ain't tryin' to scare ya
Make you high tail fly the coop
But I'm counting on ya, baby
Hope you're counting on me too

I'm already counting chickens pecking corn in our backyard
Hanging up a frame with both our names cross stitched in a heart
Might be off my rocker dreaming 'bout a hilltop front porch view
Baby, maybe cart and horsing ain't the smartest thing to do
'Cause they ain't even hatched yet, but my eggs are in one basket
And I'm loving counting chickens with you
Yeah, I'm loving counting chickens with you

One chicken, two chickens, three chickens
Oh, shoot, I think that's a duck

4x4xU

I'm the kind to take the keys
Don't sit in a shotgun seat
'Less I want to
And you make me want to
Hypnotized by the white lines
Your hands ten and two on this heart of mine
Makes me feel at home
Yeah, boy, I'm right at home

In a 4x4xU, babe
From the bayou to Kentucky
City to the country
From here to Timbuktu
Boy, after a long day
You know there ain't no wrong way
To drive my crazy crazy
In a 4x4xU

Parked out in the driveway
Backed up to a fire on a tailgate
Feet on the dashboard
Oh, nothin' I love more
90 to nothing but we in slow motion
Up in the mountains or down by the ocean
It's all the same to me
Ain't nowhere I'd rather be

Than in a 4x4xU, babe
NYC to LA
City to the country
From here to Kalamazoo
Boy, after a long day
You know there ain't no wrong way
To drive my crazy crazy
In a 4x4xU

Right there beside you

Every morning sun
Every afternoon
Fly me to the stars
Fly me to the moon

In a 4x4xU, babe
From the bayou to Kentucky
City to the country
From here to Timbuktu
Boy, after a long day
You know there ain't no wrong way
To drive my crazy crazy
In a 4x4xU

Ring Finger

We was two years in, it was just about time
That the line got walked and the knot got tied
I was tired of giving up the milk for free
So I said, "Boy, you better get on one knee"

Well, he popped the question and I took that rock
And I made me an appointment at the beauty shop
Got a little white dress and a boutonniere
While he was laying with the dog, drinking day old beer
(Drinkin' day old beer, that's right)

Then he picked me up when the big day came
The courthouse was just about a mile away
Saw a long black hair on a short bench seat
I said, "That there hair don't belong to me"

I hollered, "Tell me who"
He said, "Babe, it ain't like that"
I said, "Read between the lines"
Kept the cash and left his ass

I got the ring, he got the finger
Yeah, I hit the road 'fore we's on Jerry Springer
Love is sweet, but you know what's sweeter? (Love is sweet, know what's sweeter?)
I got the ring, he got the finger

I had the windows down, diamond in the wind
I had half a mind to call up his friend
I called my ma, said, cancel the shower
I's mad as hell, but it was happy hour
I hit up the pawn, I hit up the bar
I hit on the bouncer and I took it too far
Took it to the back, took it to the front
And I took it wherever the hell I want
(Wherever I want, wherever I want)

I got the ring, he got the finger
He got a cheating country song and buddy, I'm the singer
Love is sweet, but you know what's sweeter? (Love is sweet, know what's sweeter?)
I got the ring, he got the finger
Yeah, woo

So, this here song's for all the girls
Who had the balls to walk away from Earl
Bigger nuts than a redneck squirrel
Let me hear it if you know what I mean
You lost your man, but ya took the bling-bling

I got the ring, he got the finger
Yeah, I hit the road 'fore we's on Jerry Springer (Jerry)
Love is sweet, but you know what's sweeter? (Love is sweet, know what's sweeter?)
I got the ring, he got the finger
I got the ring
He got the bird

Middle Of It

So you're a sophomore stuck in a slump
Car's in the drive but your hearts packed up
Feel like the next couple years are gonna drag on by
So you're a dreamer chasing the stars
Where you wanna wind up sure ain't where you are
Praying the dues that you're paying are worth the price
Hard to tell how far you are from the start and the finish line

In the middle of the road when the smoke ain't clear
Don't know how to look at that half-glass beer
Got you leaning on the Lord while you're under your breath just a'cussing
Oh, but one of these days you're gonna miss these days
When you didn't even know you were on your way
Knee deep in the weeds, you can only see just a little of it
Smack dab in the middle of it

You were heart-broke, that boy did ya wrong
Your pride took a hit but you wrote a hit song
Traded the pictures for records on your wall
And, girl, I bet you didn't see that coming at all

In the middle of the road when the smoke ain't clear
Don't know how to look at that half-glass beer
Got you leaning on the Lord while you're under your breath just a'cussing
Oh, but one of these days you're gonna miss these days
When you didn't even know you were on your way
Knee deep in the weeds, you can only see just a little of it
Smack dab in the middle of it

Oh, when push comes to shove, yeah, you gotta push through
You'll be glad that you did when you do

In the middle of the road when the smoke ain't clear
Don't know how to look at that half-glass beer
Got you leaning on the Lord while you're under your breath just a'cussing
Oh, but one of these days you're gonna miss these days
When you didn't even know you were on your way
Knee deep in the weeds, you can only see just a little of it
Smack dab in the middle of it

Devil Don't Go There

I'll never forget them words you said
'Cause damn, they burned like a Marlboro Red
I know the difference 'tween wrong and right
And, boy, that way you said goodbye

Even the devil don't go there
The way you did me that night
I bet the hell you put me through
Could make his angels cry
How'd you up and leave me like that?
Are you really that cold?
I'm betting even where he lives
He wouldn't go that low
And, boy, I swear
Even the devil don't go there

You built you a fire with sticks and stones
Were you tryin' to break my heart or break my bone?
No, I never thought I'd be cursing your name
But you took my love and lit it up in flames

Even the devil don't go there
The way you did me that night
I bet the hell you put me through
Could make his angels cry
How'd you up and leave me like that?
Are you really that cold?
I'm betting even where he lives
He wouldn't go that low
And, boy, I swear
Even the devil don't go there

He'd go to Georgia, looking for a soul to steal
Spitting smoke out the back of his Coupe DeVille
He'd take a long black train down to hell and back
But, boy, I can tell ya that

Even the devil don't go there
The way you did me that night
I bet the hell you put me through
Could make his angels cry
How'd you up and leave me like that?
Are you really that cold?

Whiskey Colored Crayon

Kindergarten class teacher said
"Pass out that box of Crayolas
We're all gonna draw a picture of home
Help us get to know ya"
He drew a big orange sun
Shining down on

A little red house with a little green tree
A little blue car parked out on the street
Brother with a football, sister with a puppy dog
Mama with a smile and a church dress on
Then he raised his hand
Said, teacher, I can't draw daddy
Do you have a whiskey colored crayon?

Teacher walked down the hall, made one call
Mama left work early
That picture on the desk made mama a mess
Hearing the rest of the story
She didn't know what to say
But her mascara rained

On a little red house with a little green tree
A little blue car parked out on the street
Brother with a football, sister with a puppy dog
Mama with a smile and a church dress on
Then he raised his hand
Said, teacher, I can't draw daddy
Do you have a whiskey colored crayon?

He stood up in that circle
Said, I'm sober seven years
And all because our little boy drew this picture here

It's a little red house with a little green tree
A little blue car parked out on the street
Brother with a football, sister with a puppy dog
Mama with a smile and a church dress on
Then he raised his hand
Said, teacher, I can't draw daddy
Do you have a whiskey colored crayon?
A whiskey colored crayon

Whirlwind is the fifth studio album by American country singer Lainey Wilson. It was released on August 23, 2024, by BBR Music Group. The lead single from the album is "Hang Tight Honey".

Wilson co-wrote all 14 of the tracks on Whirlwind. Due to her busy schedule, Wilson said she focused on "quality over quantity" with respect to writing songs for Whirlwind, a different approach compared to her past projects.

She wrote several songs with The Heart Wranglers, a songwriting collective consisting of herself, Trannie Anderson, and Dallas Wilson, as well as new collaborators such as Jon Decious.
