NF - Fear Album Lyrics

NF - Fear Lyrics
(Featuring Machine Gun Kelly, James Arthur)

FEAR

[ a highlighted line to view an interpretation ]

The line is a reference to the song "The Sound Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, and also to Nate's own dark self he fought during HOPE.
Hello darkness, my old friend (hello)
Knocking at my door again
Beggin' me to come outside
Let you back into my life
Now, usually I'd be strong enough
To lock the doors and keep 'em shut
The line might be a reference to the desperation of usually trying to be perfect, but not being able to hold up that image.
But not today, I'm desperate (desperate)
So go ahead and come on in
So go ahead and come on in
So go ahead and come on in
NF has spoken about his struggles with OCD in songs such as "Leave Me Alone" as well as in several now-deleted tweets.
OCD is worse than ever, hands are bleedin', maybe I should take the pills, don't (whoa)
Know what's goin' on with me, some days I actually think I might be schizo- (whoa)
Phrenic, prolly not, but even writin' this is makin' me begin to spiral, oh, God (oh, oh, oh)
Made a promise, told myself I wouldn't let the fear back in, but then I did, though (whoa)
In the outro of "HOPE," he was fighting with his dark self - Nate tells him, that he won't run away, while the dark side says that he probably will give up.
Told the world that I was sick of runnin', then went back to runnin', what a joke (whoa)
Disappointed, yeah, me too, I thought I finally had finally made a breakthrough, guess not (oh, oh, oh)
Nate's fears hold out their hand, gesturing him to follow, lulling him into a false sense of security, thinking they might be better this time.
It's the same song and dance, you've all seen it before
Darkness holds out his hand, then we walk to the floor
Every decision made isn't mine anymore
In the music video, NF is attached to strings on his arms, legs, and neck, just like a marionette. The control is taken by his dark self, fear, and OCD.
Like a puppet with strings, I just don't have a choice
What's the truth? What's a lie?
Help me, God, help me, Lord
Face your fears, dry your eyes
Grandma died, what's the point?
Lost the keys, lost my hope, lost my will, lost my joy
Lost a friend, lost my home, lost my faith, lost my voice
(Desperate)
Standing back, watching my mansion burn to ash while I
Hold the gas can, asking God if He started this fire
Is this what You wanted? Is this what You wanted?
Make all my hopes and my dreams come to life just to lay them to rest
Is this what You wanted? Is this what You wanted?
Give me a false sense of peace just to show me what peace really is
Is this what You wanted?
On the verge, on the edge
(Is this what You wanted?)
Petrified, scared to death
(Is this what You wanted?)
Prayin' to God, desperate
(Is this what You wanted, what You wanted?)
(Is this what You wanted?)
Hangin' on by a thread
(Is this what You wanted?)
Empty heart, nothin' left
(Is this what You wanted?)
Breakin' down, spiralin'
(Is this what You wanted, what You wanted?)
(Is this what You wanted?)
Standing back (is this what You wanted?)
NF first introduced the idea of a mansion in his music in his debut album of the same name. It represents his mind, with each room being a different trauma and memory he's still living with.
Watching my mansion (is this what You wanted?)
Burn to ash (is this what You wanted?) while I (oh, oh, oh)
(What You wanted, is this what You wanted?)
Hold the gas (is this what You wanted?) can
Asking God if (is this what You wanted?)
He started this fire (is this what You wanted, what You wanted?)

HOME

Cryin' alone on the ride home drivin'
Just got the text you died
This doesn't feel real to me
Tryin', keep my mind off it
But I can't think about anything else
It's killing me slowly
What's life without you? I don't wanna know
"Goodbye," I'm not ready to say, so
I'll just act like you're here
Call your phone up, leave a voicemail
And then text ya to call me back later, it's fine
No need to rush, it's alright
I'll stop by tomorrow to say hi
We could play cards until midnight
This ain't the end, you're not goin'
You just found a new place to call
Home
Home
Home
Comes and goes, hits in waves, one day I'll be okay
Then the next, I'm a mess, walkin' down memory lane
Reminiscin', feels like it was just yesterday we were kids
Runnin' 'round in your yard, out on M-61
All the memories we made in that house growin' up
God, I miss it, would give anything just to be there again
What's life without you? I don't wanna know, yeah
"Goodbye," I'm not ready to say, so
I'll just act like you're here
Call your phone up, leave a voicemail
And then text ya to call me back later, it's fine

WHO I WAS

[ Featuring mgk ]

[ a highlighted line to view an interpretation ]

It is also a reference to the official cover art of FEAR, and how it is the mansion from the art of the namely Mansion (2015) going up in flames
Ash and dust
Everything I care about enough
Burning up (yeah)
(Alright, turn my, uh, vocals up) Nothing left of who I thought I was
(And then just let it run) I was
I'm stuck in traffic, tryna find my way to a home that I've never known
On a GPS with no address
The core conflict here is: how can we follow something that has been scattered by our previous actions?
So I'll follow my heart, but my heart is scattered
Like my father's ashes in the back of the rental after I dropped his urn
Probably a metaphor for everything I've learned
Like how the only love I'll have is gonna crash and burn
He's saying that achieving the success he rapped about for a decade didn't fix his problems; it just created new ones, leaving him feeling "poor" in spirit.
Or how the poorest I've felt was after the most I've earned
The biggest lie told is that no one should be concerned
There's gotta be another highway that don't lead to Hell
A star to lead me through the darkest night like Christian Bale
I hid from God for more than two decades of life
It's a statement of him finding his own, more accepting version of faith after decades of rebellion.
And when I came back to the light, He didn't ask me if I'm Christian still
Just opened up His arms and embraced me like I'm His Son
Erasin' all the archetypes of what people like me become
Since I was young, my personality split like serpent's tongue
But all the poison in my body still ain't make me numb
"A best friend" refers to Luke 'The Dingo' Trembath, mgk's close friend.
I lost a best friend and felt all that
Cryin' on his open casket while I knelt on that
I had a best man picked out for my wedding
But instead of getting married, I carried guilt and left all that
A vagabond that broke a bond for Boca Raton
Who all along regretted he never kept all that
I left everything behind, but this engagement ring and a frozen heart
I'm standin' in the fire to melt all that, yeah
Ash and dust
Everything I care about enough
(Burn) Burning up
Nothing left of who I thought I was
I was
I, I, I was
Yeah (burn)
Lash out, need to take a breath and calm down
Try to regulate, don't know how
Wasn't taught that in my house
Nate expresses how he wants to be a better parent to his kids, than his parents were to him, hoping to break the cycle of generational trauma.
Kids of my own, I step back
Look at those smiles and feel sad
Hope they don't wind up like Dad
Stuck in this loop like I am
I've called you, never heard back
After everything we've been through, the good and the bad
You're 'bout to throw it all away and overreact
Because I overreacted, karma, I guess
My temper gets the best of me
A part of me that I wish I knew how to get rid of
M.O stands for modus operandi which is a Latin phrase, approximately translated as 'mode (or manner) of operating'
It's the issue I have, my M.O.
Say I need you and I love you to death
Then turn around and go and treat you like you nothin' but trash
I know-
I know I messed that part up, but
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
Yeah, I know, sometimes, I
Lash out, need to take a breath and calm down
Try to regulate, don't know how
Wasn't taught that in my house
Kids of my own, I step back
Look at those smiles and feel sad

GIVE ME A REASON

[ a highlighted line to view an interpretation ]

Here, he suggests that being "loved" (successful/comfortable) has made him creatively bored, and he needs the struggle and the negative energy ("hated again") to motivate the "beast" inside him.
Yeah, enough with the love, I need to be hated again
I need somebody to wake up the beast and really get under my skin
I need somebody to push me, tell me that I ain't no good with the pen
I need somebody to poke and pry and really get into my head
I need somebody to laugh, tell me I'm trash, tell me I might as well quit
I need somebody to grab the blade in my back, stab, and give it a twist
I need somebody to smash, break all my plaques
Tell me I shouldn't exist
I need somebody to ask why you even rap
"You'll never be one of the-" (hey)
I need somebody to brag and show me their cash
And tell me, "You'll never be rich"
I need somebody with stats and numbers and facts
Tell me I ain't got no hits
I need somebody who's wack and ain't got no class to tell me I'm not on they list
I need somebody to act like I'm in the past so I can remind 'em I'm here
I need somebody to-
Give me a reason, whoa, give me a reason
Ayy, give me a reason, whoa, yeah
Give me a reason (woo, woo, woo)
I forgot what that struggle like (mmm)
I forgot what that hustle like (mmm)
I forgot what that humble like (mmm)
I forgot what that, I forgot what that (ayy)
I ain't forget about nothin', to keep it a hundred, I'm honestly bored
In Why, the artist expresses a similar emotional state, reflecting frustration and inner conflict that appears throughout his work.
I wanna feel like I felt when nobody was followin' me and I had no awards
Many people, especially those that do not like NF, call him a copy or wannabe of Eminem (whose alter ego is known as "Slim Shady").
I wanna get back to hearin' them call me a wannabe Shady who ain't got no voice
I want the people that promised they'd always be with me to leave me and walk out the door
I want the fans to quit buyin' them tickets and tell me they don't wanna see me on tour
I want the label to drop me and tell me it's over, the music ain't makin' no noise
I want the critics to call me a gimmick and tell me they thought I was better before
I wanna hear you keep talkin' the way that you talkin' when no one's around to record
(I wanna-) Woo, yeah, I want a story
I wanna hear about how you ain't feelin' the music and why it ain't better than yours
(I wanna-) Woo, yeah, tell me some more
I wanna hear about, I wanna talk about
I wanna air it out, I need somebody to
Yeah, give me a reason, whoa, give me a reason
Ayy, give me a reason, whoa
Give me a reason (woo, woo, woo)
I forgot what that struggle like (ayy)
I forgot what that hustle like (ayy)

I forgot what that humble like (ayy)
I forgot what that, I forgot what that (woo, woo, woo)

Interpretation

Here, he suggests that being "loved" (successful/comfortable) has made him creatively bored, and he needs the struggle and the negative energy ("hated again") to motivate the "beast" inside him.

In Why, the artist expresses a similar emotional state, reflecting frustration and inner conflict that appears throughout his work.
Many people, especially those that do not like NF, call him a copy or wannabe of Eminem (whose alter ego is known as "Slim Shady").

SORRY

[ Featuring James Arthur ]

I crossed the line and broke an oath
Swore I would never let you go
Blamed you for things that weren't your fault, yeah
I'm sorry
I'm sorry
Oh, I wish that I had held you close and given you what you deserve
But that's what everybody says when it's too late to fix a bridge that's burned
That's burned
I've been waitin' by the phone just prayin' that you'd call me up
To say you wish you woulda stayed and never said goodbye to us
I'm not lookin' for a fight, baby, I just want to talk to ya
And say I'm sorry
I'm sorry
Mmm, yeah
I bent the truth and broke your trust, mmm, yeah
Treated you like you weren't enough (you were enough), ooh
Said I'd be there but never was (I never was), hmm
But I'm sorry, hmm, yeah
I'm sorry
Oh, I wish that I had held you close and given you what you deserve (I wish, I wish), hmm
But that's what everybody says when it's too late to fix a bridge that's burned
That is burned
I've been waitin' by the phone just prayin' that you'd call me up (call me up)
To say you wish you woulda stayed and never said goodbye to us (never would've said goodbye)
I'm not lookin' for a fight, baby, I just want to talk to ya (I just want to talk to you, baby)
And say I'm sorry (I'm sorry)
Yeah, I'm sorry (yeah)
And say I'm sorry
Yeah, I'm sorry (oh, oh)
And say I'm sorry
I'm sorry

WASHED UP

[ a highlighted line to view an interpretation ]

Before fame Nate didn't care for money or fame he just had drive and was hungry for the fame which is evident in his song "When I Grow Up" where he raps
Yeah, I'm startin' to wonder if I lost the hunger
Where's that kid I used to be when I was on the come-up?
Where's that drive I used to have before I had the numbers?
Where's that "Take me as I am, I ain't gon' be no puppet"?
Where's that "Tell it like it is, don't let the label hush it"? (Yeah)
Where's that "Yeah, I know I'm rich, but we gon' keep the budget"?
Nate addresses the pressure that comes from popularity and being a mainstream artist in the radio.
Where's that "I don't really care about the radio
If they don't like the song, then don't play it, I ain't changin' nothin'"? (Changin' nothin')
Yeah, where's that person at?
This parallels "Nate" from The Search, where he talks to his child self.
You see him, tell him I've been hurtin' bad (I've been hurtin' bad)
You see him, tell him that I miss the way we used to rap
Nate doesn't think his recent songs have been bad, but he fears that his career's peak, or "moment," has already passed.
And I ain't makin' music anymore if he don't care enough to have my back (have my back)
Yeah, droppin' trash
Wouldn't say that I've been doin' that
But I'd be lyin' through my teeth if I said I don't think my moment passed
Yeah, I think my moment passed (moment passed)
Am I on the brink of somethin' great
Or have I lost it?
Am I on the verge of makin' waves
Being washed up is slang for being no longer succesfull and a hopeless future.
Or am I washed up?
This small room's a intimacy, no feelin' like it
Those old shoes nostalgic, I put my feet inside 'em
The Lord knew I needed this to survive the violence
The raw truth, I'm nothin' without the Father's guidance
"Who are you?" the question that built this whole empire
"You're old news," a statement that makes me think "retire"
The game's noose, eventually we all have to climb it
One wrong move and career is dyin'
In the music video, the sound effect of gunshots is replaced with a "thunk" sound as NF is hit over the head with a shovel by the embodiment of his fear.
Yeah, can I revive it?
Did that check the label gave me make me uninspired?
Am I ignorant to think that I still got the fire?
Am I hangin' onto somethin' I should say goodbye to?
Yeah, has my time expired?
Did my prime already pass, or am I 'bout to find it?
Did my peak already happen, or am I still climbin'?
Is that passion that I had gone or am I- (am I-)
Am I on the brink of somethin' great
Or have I lost it?
Am I on the verge of makin' waves
Or am I washed up?
