Here we lie
We want to believe
So we lie
All the time
Hold my hand
Here they lie
Beneath our feet
So many lives
In defeat
He left her alone that day
On her bed, lying still
He had tried to understand religion in order to understand life
He wanted to believe
And although he still slept with earplugs in, as he lay beside her head to toe
He woke so many times, listening for her breath
Like a light switch, for him it had come as an axiomatic understanding
That there was no god, no creator, no reason for life
Only to survive and multiply
In at least one of those he had failed
He was working hard to fail at the other
But unlike a light switch, it took too long for her to die
Shallow breathes matched by his shallow urges to "let go, it's ok to go now
I'll see you on the other side"
Or not
