Stinkybob - The Book Lyrics

Stinkybob - The Book Lyrics

You wrote your life story
In the margins of an old book
You found misplaced on some library shelf
The pencil that you took
To the long unread manuscript
Wore dull in your actions not overlooked

All your measures and sins
Were meticulously laid out
In the spaces besides the words
All the ill-taken chances that never paid out
All the small victories and defeats
Logged in desperation before you fade out

Then you replaced the book
On that mistaken shelf where it laid
Previously unchosen, unread
Gathering the dust of long empty days
Then took up your pencil, your coat and your hat
And left by the side door, fading away

The night swallowed you
The damp city streets
No money to spend on a smoke or a drink
No home, no friends to meet
Just street lights and mist and on occasion
Recently stirred memories

One day they found the book there
With your life inscribed on its leaves
Threadbare at the corners, cracked at the spine
A manual about stones, I believe
And seeing the pages corrupt with your script
Discarded and replaced it with a book about seeds
