I remember the dust, the sweat, tears that I cried
As a soldier lay beside me, giving up his life.
I was lonely and sometimes wondered why,
Am I here?
I was cold and wet one full moon August night
As I laid there in silence, the bullets passed me by.
Praying to God that he would send a sign,
And he did!
Oh, then he did!
I saw angels all around me,
Covered in mud and dirt.
Didn't see no wings, but they damn sure were tough.
They took me by the hand,
We stood tall.
Not just fighting for our freedom,
We were fighting for us all.
Open my eyes and looked up, with a grin
Said AMEN
It was right there in that moment, I realized.
The one that looked down on me, made the stars and moon so bright.
Now I lay my head and fall asleep that night.
Not before I say my prayers, thanking God I'm alive.
I saw angels all around me,
Covered in mud and dirt.
Didn't see no wings, but they damn sure were tough.
They took me by the hand,
We stood tall.
Not just fighting for our freedom,
We were fighting for us all.
Open my eyes and looked up, with a grin
Said AMEN
I'd do it all again
AMEN
