The first time that I heard those words, I was in little league
I thought the world was over when the ball went right past me
I dropped my head and left the field the tears ran down my face
My dad pulled me up close to him that's when I heard him say
Son all I'll ever ask is that you do your best
And if that's not enough, you know I'll take care of the rest
All I want to see is that your all that you can be
You know this life is just a test
Just do the best you can and I'll take care of the rest
Years passed by I don't know why but I forgot about that day
Guess some how that same old grinde just got in the way
The doorbell rang and a policeman stood there with my son
When I saw that boy in tears I did what my dad had done
Son all I'll ever ask is that you do your best
And if that's not enough, you know I'll take care of the rest
All I want to see is that your all that you can be
You know this life is just a test
Just do the very best you can and I'll take care of the rest
My wife's passed on and the kids are grown, The memories are mine
It's lonelier these days but I know there's not much time
I kneel down close my eyes raise my hands and pray
Lord I've done the best I could and then I heard him say
Son all I've ever asked is that you did your best
And if that was not enough, I took care of the rest
I just wanted you to see that you were all that you could be
You know this life was just a test
You did the best you could now I'll take care of the rest
You did the best you could now I'll take care of the rest
