Willie Nelson - Last Leaf on the Tree Lyrics

Last Leaf

[ Originally by Tom Waits ]

I'm the last leaf on the tree
The autumn took the rest
But it won't take me
I'm the last leaf on the tree

When the autumn wind blows
They're already gone
They flutter to the ground
They just can't hang on
When there's nothing in this world
That I ain't seen
I greet all the new ones
That are coming in green

I'm the last leaf on the tree
The autumn took the rest
But they won't take me
'Cause I'm the last leaf on the tree

They say I got staying power
Here on the tree
But I've been here since Eisenhower
And I've outlived even he

I'm the last leaf on the tree
The autumn took the rest
But they won't take me
I'm the last leaf on the tree

I fight off the snow
I fight off the hail
Nothing makes me go
I'm like some vestigial tail
I'll be here through eternity
If you wanna know how long
If they cut down this tree
I'll show up in a song

I'm the last leaf on the tree
The autumn took the rest
But they won't take me
I'm the last leaf on the tree
I'm the last leaf on the tree
I'm the last leaf on the tree

If It Wasn't Broken

You may be empty
So is the drum
That brings me rhythm
When I've got none
How would you know you had a heart
If it wasn't broken
If it wasn't broken

So you lost your baby
So you lost your job
And you lost all faith
In the one you call God
You came to me for refuge
And I've got none
How would you know you had a heart
If it wasn't broken
If it wasn't broken

Many will hurt you
You'll hurt them too
You leave them high and dry
And they'll leave you blue
But the love you share
Is worth the world and more
And that's why you care
That's what you stood for

You came to me for refuge
And I've got none
How would you know you had a heart
If it wasn't broken
If it wasn't broken
If it wasn't broken
If it wasn't broken

Lost Cause

[ Originally by Beck ]

Your sorry eyes, they cut through the bone
Makin' it hard to leave you alone
Leavin' you here wearing your wounds
Waving your guns at somebody new

Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're a lost cause

There's too many people you used to know
They see you coming and they see you go
They know your secrets and you know theirs
This town is crazy, but nobody cares

Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're a lost cause

I'm tired of fighting
I'm tired of fighting
Fighting for a lost cause

There's a place where you are going
You ain't never been before
There's no one laughing at your back now
No one standing at your door
Is that what you thought love was for?

Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're lost
Baby, you're a lost cause

I'm tired of fighting
I'm tired of fighting
Fighting for a lost cause

Come Ye

[ Originally by Nina Simone ]

Come ye, you who would have peace
Hear me, what I say now
I say come ye, ye who would have peace
It's time to learn how to pray

I say come ye, ye who have no fear
Of what tomorrow brings, child
Start praying for a better world
Of peace and all good things

I say come ye, ye who still have hope
That we can still survive now
Let's work together, together as we should
And fight to stay alive

I say come ye, ye who would have love
It's time to take a stand
Don't mind abuse, it must be paid
For the love of your fellow man

I say come ye, I say come ye
Who would have hope
Who would have peace
Who would have love
And would have peace

Keep Me in Your Heart

Shadows are fallin' and I'm runnin' out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you, it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

When you get up in the mornin' and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leavin' nightly called When All is Said and Done
Just keep me in your heart for a while

Keep me in your heart for a while
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sometimes you're doin' simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you just like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while

Hold me in your thoughts
Take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall in view
When the winter comes, keep the fires lit
I'll be right next to you

Engine driver headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turnin' but they're runnin' out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while

Keep me in your heart for a while
Keep me in your heart for a while
Keep me in your heart for a while
Keep me in your heart for a while

Robbed Blind

[ Originally by Keith Richards ]

Someone stole some money
And who, it ain't quite clear
Stolen from my honey
She holds my stash 'round here
The cops, you know, I can't involve them
'Cause they'd only interfere
So I hit the usual suspects
But I drew a blank around then

I'm robbed blind
I'm robbed blind

Found a letter to her
It was from a friend of mine
It was a plan to screw me
That's what they had in mind
The cops, I can't involve them
I don't want them coming near
'Cause this thing is getting personal
And picture is now quite clear

I'm robbed blind
Yeah, I'm robbed blind
And bled dry

The stash no longer matters
And he ain't hard to find
It ain't the money, honey
But the heart you stole was mine
But the cops, I can't involve them
God knows what they could find
But I've learned a lesson from my girl
Whose fate is yet to been defined

I've been robbed blind, robbed blind
Robbed blind
Bled dry
That was a damn good try
Robbed blind, robbed blind
Robbed blind
And I'm robbed blind
Bled dry

House Where Nobody Lives

[ Originally by Tom Waits ]

There's a house on my block
That's abandoned and cold
Folks moved out of it a
Long time ago
And they took all their things
And they never came back
Looks like it's haunted
With the windows all cracked
And everyone call it
The house, the house where
Nobody lives
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?
Well the paint was all cracked
It was peeled off of the wood
Papers were stacked on the porch
Where I stood
And the weeds had grown up
Just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney
And an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever
Come back to the
House were nobody lives
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do someone wrong?
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver
Don't trade it for gold
I have all of life's treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
Ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house
It's a palace for sure
Without love...
It ain't nothin but a house
A house where nobody lives
Without love it ain't nothin
But a house, a house where
Nobody lives.

Are You Ready for the Country?

[ Originally by Neil Young ]

Slippin' and slidin'
And playin' domino
Leftin' and rightin'
It's not a crime, you know

You've gotta tell your story, boy
Before it's time to go

Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go
Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go

I was talkin' to the preacher
Said, God was on my side
Then I ran into the hangman
He said, it's time to die

You've gotta tell your story, boy
You know the reason why

Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go
Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go

I was talkin' to the preacher
Said, God was on my side
Then I ran into the hangman
He said, it's time to die

You've gotta tell your story, boy
You know the reason why

Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go
Are you ready for the country?
Because it's time to go

Do You Realize??

[ Originally by The Flaming Lips ]

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize we're floating in space
Do you realize that happiness makes you cry
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize, oh, oh, oh?
Do you realize that everyone you know
Someday will die?

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize?

Wheels

You get it right, you get it wrong
The years grow shorter but the days are long
So get it up and get it on
And just keep your love runnin' till the wheels come off

It feel alright, it feels all wrong
It's all one day and it's one long song
I'm gonna laugh all night and howl at the dawn
I'm gonna keep my love runnin' till the wheels come off

It feels so good to let you go
My mind moves faster now and my heart beats slow
I thought I might just let you know
I'm gonna keep my love runnin' till the wheels won't roll

We're down to go down to the wire
The noise gets louder and the seas get higher
The world gets cold and the scene gets dire
We're gonna keep our love runnin' till the wheels catch fire
We're gonna keep our love runnin' till the wheels catch fire
We're gonna keep our love runnin' till the wheels catch fire

Broken Arrow

[ Originally by Neil Young ]

Hello Mister Soul
I just dropped by to pick up a reason
For the thought that I caught
That my head is the event of the season

The lights turned on and the curtain fell down
And when it was over it felt like a dream
They stood at the stage door and begged for a scream
The agents had paid for the black limousine
That waited outside in the rain
Did you see them, did you see them?

Did you see them in the river?
They were there to wave to you
Could you tell that the empty quiver
Brown skinned Indian on the banks
That were crowded and narrow
Held a broken arrow

Eighteen years of American dreams
He saw that his brother had sworn on the wall
He hung up his eyelids and ran down the hall
His mother had told him a trip was a fall
And don't mention babies at all
Did you see him, did you see him?

Did you see him in the river?
He was there to wave to you
Could you tell that the empty quiver
Brown skinned Indian on the banks
That were crowded and narrow
Held a broken arrow

The streets were lined for the wedding parade
The Queen wore the white gloves, the county of song
The black covered caisson her horses had drawn
Protected her King from the sun rays of dawn
They married for peace and were gone
Did you see them, did you see them?

Did you see them in the river?
They were there to wave to you
Could you tell that the empty quiver
Brown skinned Indian on the banks
That were crowded and narrow
Held a broken arrow

Color of Sound

If silence is golden, what color is sound?
And the love we don't hold in plants a seed in the ground
Every thought that is spoken, every face in the crowd
Every heart that's been broken bleeds the color of sound

If silence is golden, what color is sound?
New beginnings unfolding when the end comes around
Every road that leads nowhere, every road that's homebound
Every wind that is blowing breathes the color of sound

Listen, here comes that silence again
Listen, the golden nothing

All the world is God's portrait
And it was painted out loud
Every heart that is golden
Beats the color of sound

Listen, here comes that silence again
Listen, the golden nothing

If silence is golden, what color is sound?
All the love we don't hold in plants a seed in the ground
It grows into a tree and falls when no one's around
Any eye that is open can see the color of sound
Any eye that is open can see the color of sound
