The Cure - Songs of a Lost World Album Lyrics

The Cure - Songs of a Lost World Lyrics

Alone

This is the end of every song that we sing
The fire burned out to ash and the stars grown dim with tears
Cold and afraid, the ghosts of all that we've been
We toast, with bitter dregs
To our emptiness

And the birds falling out of our skies
And the words falling out of our minds
And here is to love, to all the love
Falling out of our lives
Hopes and dreams are gone
The end of every song

And it all stops
We were always sure that we would never change
And it all stops
We were always sure that we would stay the same
But it all stops
And we close our eyes to sleep
To dream a boy and girl
Who dream the world is nothing but a dream

Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Broken-voiced lament to call us home
This is the end of every song we sing
Where did it go?
Where did it go?

Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Broken-voiced lament to call us home
This is the end of every song we sing
Alone

And Nothing Is Forever

Promise you'll be with me in the end
Say we'll be together with no regret
For however far away
You will remember me tonight
Promise you'll be with me in the end
Say we'll be together and you won't forget
For however far away
You will remember me in time

And slide down close beside me
In the silence of a heartbeat
You'll wrap your arms around me
In a murmured lullaby
Is the memory of the first time
In the stillness of a teardrop
I'll hold you for the last time
In the dying of the life

And I know, I know
For my world has grown old
And nothing is forever
And I know, I know
My world has grown old
But it really doesn't matter
If you say we'll be together
If you promise you'll be with me in the end
Promise you'll be with me in the end

I know, I know
My world has grown old
And nothing is forever
And nothing is forever
And I know, I know
My world has grown old
But it really doesn't matter
If you say we'll be together
If you promise you'll be with me in the end
Promise you'll be with me in the end
(Promise me you'll be with me in the end)
(Promise me you'll be with me in the end)

Slide down close beside me
In the silence of a heartbeat

A Fragile Thing

"Every time you kiss me, I could cry" she said
"Don't tell me how you miss me
I could die tonight of a broken heart
This loneliness has changed me, and we've been too far apart
And it's too late now for me to just forget
I never thought I'd need to feel regret for all I never was
But all this time alone has left me hurt and sad and lost
Yeah, every time you kiss me I could cry
Don't tell me how you miss me
I could die tonight of a broken heart
This loneliness has changed me, we have been too far apart"

"And there's nothing you can do to change it back" she said
"Nothing you can do but sing
This love is a fragile thing
Nothing you can do now but pretend again"
"Nothing you can do to change it back" she said
"Nothing you can do but sing
This love is a fragile thing
This love is my everything
But nothing you can do to change the end"

No nothing you can do (nothing you can do)

"Every time you leave me is a lie" she said
"You make believe you need me, but you try too hard
And it feels so wrong
You promise me forever, and you say it won't be long
But it's too late now for me to just forget
I never thought I'd need to feel regret for all I never was
But all this time alone has left me hurt and sad and lost
Yeah, every time you leave me is a lie
You make believe you need me, but you try too hard
And it feels so wrong
You promise me forever, and you say it won't be long"

"And there's nothing you can do to change it back" she said
"Nothing you can do but sing
This love is a fragile thing
Nothing you can do now but pretend again"
"Nothing you can do to change it back" she said
"Nothing you can do but sing
This love is a fragile thing
This love is my everything
But nothing you can do to change the end"

No nothing you can do to change the end

Warsong

Oh, it's misery the way we fight
For bitter ends we tear the night in two
I want your death, you want my life
We tell each other lies to hide the truth

And we hate ourselves for everything we do
The shame, wounded pride, vengeful anger burning deep inside
Poison in our blood
And pain, broken dreams, mournful hopes
For all we might have been, all misunderstood

No way out of this
No way for us to find a way to peace
We never found before
However we regret
All we will ever know is bitter ends
For we were born to war
For we were born to war

However we regret
All we will ever know is bitter ends
For we were born to war

Drone:Nodrone

I'm breaking up again, I feel it in the air
I'm really not sure what to say
I don't remember being there at all
Yeah, I know, there's no question that I was
But the answers I have
Are not the answers that you want

So it's all, don't know, I really don't
And all, think so, but maybe not
And all, could be a case of me misplacing my identity
Yeah, don't know, I really don't
And all, think so, but maybe not
And all, I guess it's more or less like ending up as nobody

Down, down, down, yeah, I'm pretty much done
Staring down the barrel of the same warm gun
Down, down, down, yeah, I'm pretty much done

I lose my reason when I fall through the door
Endless black night lost in looking for more
At least I know now how I lose it before
One last shot at happiness (one last shot, one last shot)

(Ha, ha, ha, ha, happiness)
(Happiness, happiness, happiness)

I know there's something up, it's all so hit and miss
I'm trying to make some sense of it, I guess the explanation is
I can't anymore, if I ever really could
Kind of strange to think it takes this long to get misunderstood

So it's all, don't know, I really don't
And all, think so, but maybe not
And all, could be a case of me displacing my reality
And all, I guess it's more or less the way that it was meant to be

Down, down, down, yeah, I'm pretty much done
Staring down the barrel of the same warm gun
Down, down, down, yeah, I'm pretty much done

I lose my reason when I fall through the door
Endless black night lost in looking for more
At least I know now how I lose it before
One last shot (one last show, one last shot)

I Can Never Say Goodbye

Thunder rolling in to drown
November moon in cold black rain
As lightning tears the sky apart
I'm whispering his name
He has to wake up
Love slipping away
Hear the bells across the sea
It's almost too late

Shadows growing closer now
There is nowhere left to hide
I can't wake this dreamless sleep
However hard I try
I'm down on my knees
And I'm aching inside
Something wicked this way comes
From out the cool November night
Something wicked this way comes
To steal away my brother's life
Something wicked this way comes
I could never say goodbye

Something wicked this way comes
From out the cruel and treacherous high
Something wicked this way comes
To steal away my brother's life
Something wicked this way comes

All I Ever Am

I think too much of all that's gone
Of how it was before my thoughts
Obsessed with choices made for sure
In ignorance of history
And consequence as more and more
I misremember hopelessly

The way love turned out every time
Was never quite enough

I lose all my life like this
Refracting time and memories
And all for fear of what I'll find
If I just stop and empty out my mind
Of all the ghosts and all the dreams
All I hold to in belief
But all I ever am
Is somehow never quite all I am now

I think too much of all to come
Of how it will be after I give up
My weary dance with age and resignation moves me slow
Toward a dark and empty stage
Where I can sing the world I know

The way love turns out every time
Will never be enough

I waste all my world like this
Attending time and memories
And all for fear of what I'll find
If I just stop and empty out my mind
Of all the ghosts and all the dreams
All I hold to in belief
That all I ever am
Is somehow never quite all I am now

And all for fear of what I'll find
If I just stop

Endsong

And I'm outside in the dark
Staring at the blood red moon
Remembering the hopes and dreams I had
All I had to do
And wondering what became of that boy
And the world he called his own
And I'm outside in the dark
Wondering how I got so old

It's all gone, it's all gone
Nothing left of all I loved
It all feels wrong
It's all gone, it's all gone, it's all gone
No hopes, no dreams, no world
No, I don't belong
AI don't belong here anymore

It's all gone, it's all gone
I will lose myself in time
It won't be long
It's all gone, it's all gone, it's all gone

Left alone with nothing at the end of every song
Left alone with nothing at the end of every song
Left alone with nothing
Nothing
Nothing
Nothing

Back to: The Cure

Songs of a Lost World is the upcoming fourteenth studio album by English alternative rock band the Cure, released on 1 November 2024 via Fiction, Lost Music, Polydor and Capitol Records.

Their first studio album since 4:13 Dream, released in 2008, Songs of a Lost World was several years in the making; it was originally intended for release in 2019, and it is the band's first full-length album to feature Reeves Gabrels on guitars since he joined as a full time member in 2012.

Prior to its release, the band promoted the album in 2022 and 2023 with a 90-date, 33-country live tour, Shows of a Lost World. Perry Bamonte rejoined the band for the tour, but he didn't participate in the album's recording.

The album cover was designed by Andy Vella and features Bagatelle, a 1975 sculpture by Slovenian artist Janez Pirnat.

The songs were entirely written, composed and arranged by the Cure's leader Robert Smith, marking the second time he has done so following 1985's The Head on the Door.
