Kill Me Video (MV)

Arriving as Track No. 3 on Phoebe Bridgers' highly anticipated 2026 studio album, Lost Weekend, 'Kill Me' explores the feeling of falling in love, but then immediately feeling trepidatious and anxious about the prospect of getting hurt by end of the romance.

It features an apparent reference to Bridgers' partner, Bo Burnham, who co-wrote a number of songs on Lost Weekend, including Bobby and The Governor's Waltz.

'Kill Me' is one of the more dreamlike, hazy tracks on Lost Weekend, with Bridgers' airy, reverb-laden vocals drifting across the cushioning guitar riffs and gentle drums. This captures the sweet, rose-tinted ambience of Bridgers' portrayal of falling in love.

But then, the composition grows increasingly fractured and jarring, with the introduction of industrial-sounding drums, eerie vocal effects and raging electric guitars, seemingly hinting at the worries our protagonist feels at the possibility of getting hurt.

Throughout 'Kill Me', Bridgers builds on a key theme of Lost Weekend in struggling with her identity. This is thrown immediately into focus by the line, "Times are scary / My boys are getting married" - as when her friends get married, it makes our narrator look inwards and start to worry about the state of her own love life.

Bridgers then describes how she meets her new love interest - seemingly referring to her current partner, Bo Burnham, who she reportedly started dating in 2022 ("Costume party / When the veil was thinning / He kissed me hello / He tastes like a flower with chemical petals / Bobby, you taught me that I know nothing").

Through the fretful lines, "This is gonna kill me / Wait / This is gonna kill me / Wait", Bridgers juxtaposes the initial joy of falling in love with the panic at what might happen if she falls too hard, and then ends up in pain because they decide to break up.

The closing lines, "Tamam Shud / Let's go missing" - is translated to "It is over" or "It is finished" in Persian, a potential reference to the Somerton Man, an unidentified body who was found on Somerton Park in Adelaide, Australia. Months after he was found, a note was discovered in his pocket watch with the words "Tamam Shud". Bridgers' declarations that they should "go missing" and escape the prying eyes of the world could be read as a reference to the idea of changing or losing your identity, and becoming unidentifiable and no longer widely recognised by fans or the media. Then, they can live in their own happy, protected bubble.
